What if you were to have a civil political debate with someone who has no obligation to tell the truth? That would be frustrating, right? If your opponent in the debate is not held accountable for past statements or acceptable facts, then there really is no debate. There is no way to win, and certainly no way to find common ground.

This is the situation we find ourselves in now with Fox News.

Over the weekend, FoxNews.com ran a story of Brooke Singmanwhose title claimed the hillary clinton the campaign “infiltrated” the servers of Trump Tower, which was presented as de facto evidence supporting the former president that of Donald Trump pretend he was spied on.

Corn The New York Times journalist charlie savage writing“The entire narrative appeared to be mostly fake or old news — the latest example of the challenge created by a barrage of similar conspiracy theories from Mr. Trump and his allies.”

He also adds this rather concise explanation of how this story perfectly illustrates misinformation:

Upon careful consideration, these stories are often based on misrepresentation of facts or outright misinformation. They also tend to involve dense and obscure issues, so dissecting them requires asking readers to expend a lot of mental energy and time, raising the question of whether the media should even cover such claims. Yet Trump allies portray the media as engaged in a cover-up if they don’t.

Singman’s report focused on additional details included in Durham’s filing, and in particular on the former Clinton campaign lawyer Michael Susan, who was indicted last year for making a false statement to the FBI. The initial title of the report misled by suggesting Durham’s filing indicated the Clinton campaign had “infiltrated” Trump’s servers when that word was not found in the filing document. The “undercover” quote came courtesy of Kash Patelformer Trump administration staffer and political ally of Devin Nunes.

The misleading account did not end with a story on FoxNews.com. The hosts of Fox News primetime programming took the claims at face value and, in at least one case, took them to wild bullshit levels.

Like Mediaite Michael Luciano wrote last night, “jesse watters falsely claimed that Hillary Clinton had paid hackers to produce false evidence in an effort to show that Donald Trump was colluding with the Russian government. ”

The Fox News host obviously misinterpreted the dossier to say that Clinton tried to entrap Trump by planting evidence. Watters said:

The Durham documents show that Hillary Clinton hired people who hacked into Trump’s home and office computers before and during his presidency, and planted evidence that he colluded with Russia.

Yeah. You heard it right. Hillary broke into a presidential candidate’s computer server and a sitting president’s computer server, spying on them. There, his hackers planted evidence, fabricated evidence linking Trump to Russia, and then passed that doctored material to federal authorities and the media.

None of this is true. Meanwhile, the Fox News reporter Howard Kurtz blow up the competition for turning a blind eye to history. fox and friends opened Tuesday’s show amplifying the same idea (but with slightly less aggressive language) and then mocked the media for ignoring it.

It turns out the media had a very good reason to ignore this story. As much as Fox News hosts and anchors are willing to give it airtime, it’s not exactly a bombshell. Perhaps that’s why the Fox News hosts had to overstate its conclusions, because there just isn’t much to it.

The coverage of this Durham dossier is just another example of deliberate dishonesty that can easily be drawn from the past week.

Also on Monday evening, Tucker-Carlson resurrected on Seth rich conspiracy, although he did not name him. The theory claims the 27-year-old stole DNC emails during the 2016 presidential election campaign, provided those emails to Wikileaks, and was fatally shot.

Fox News pushed this conspiracy theory several times in 2017, but ended up having to withdraw its reporting. The Rich family sued and Fox reportedly settled millions of dollars.

Need another example? Assets’ alleged deletion of top secret documents from the White House to Mar-a-Lago, which led the National Archives to appeal to the Department of Justice toinvestigate the legality of the concealment of documents.

The laissez-faire treatment of this story by Fox News, and by the conservative media in general, was telling. There are exceptions: Bret Bayer asked his Special report panel Thursday night whether that showed any inconsistency on the part of Republicans, given the Hillary Clinton mail server kerfuffle and “lock her up” chants that were at the heart of the Trump campaign in 2016.

It’s great that Baier asked this question. But this line of inquiry was so unique that Mediaite felt it was worthy enough to write it down. Yes, we’ve covered the lowest bar of journalistic integrity because it was newsworthy when Fox News encountered it.

The other example of embarrassing double standards? Fox News’ hagiography of Canadian truckers breaking the law to protest vaccination mandates. This was perfectly illustrated by the two CNN shows Brian Steeler and the Daily showeach of them noted how Fox News handled the same blockade-centric news and foreign caravan stories nROMs neighboring countries very different from the history of Canadian truckers.

What is different about Canadian truckers, BLM protesters, and undocumented Central American immigrant groups in the United States? I’ll leave it to you, dear reader, to set your sights on thinking and figure this out for yourself.

Golf players have a saying for anyone caught cheating while playing. Golf has a long memory… you break the rules once, your reputation is forever tarnished. Journalistic integrity should, and often has, the same standards, though it’s curious how this type of misrepresentation often gets a pass. If this were to happen on CNN and the story was about Trump, you can be SURE Fox News wouldn’t have forgotten about it. But I digress…

Fox News dominates the ratings, but to extend the golf metaphor, they shoot the ball from bad lies, cut shots, and maybe even throw balls out of sand traps straight onto the green, like Michael Jordan famous fact, according to a Sports Illustrated report. Except it’s not fair play or even bad sportsmanship. It’s cheating, plain and simple, and a big unfair advantage.

The truth is, it seems very often that Fox News’ main goal is to make sure the truth doesn’t matter. What about the fact that the conservative media, especially Fox News, not only get away with this kind of obvious duplicity, but embrace it? It’s history.

You can’t have an effective debate with liars because, well… they lie.

Do you want to know why our country is so divided along partisan political lines? You can start by looking at which side of this divide is held to a standard of truth – and which is deliberately flouting it.
