Marc Overmars, a former Dutch soccer star who became a top manager for one of Europe’s most prominent teams, has quit his job abruptly after admitting he sent inappropriate text messages to female colleagues.

Overmars, 48, had been director of football affairs at AFC Ajax, Amsterdam’s football team, since 2012. He had recently renewed his contract until June 2026, according to Ajax, who have announced his resignation on Sunday evening. Many details remained unclear, including whether any charges had been brought against Overmars.

Overmars apologized for his behavior in a statement released by Ajax, in which he said he was “ashamed”.

“Last week I was confronted with reports about my behavior. And how it felt to others,” Overmars said. “Unfortunately, I didn’t realize I was crossing the line with this, but this has been made clear to me in recent days.”

“For someone in my position, this behavior is unacceptable. I see it now too. But it’s too late. I don’t see any other option than to leave Ajax,” he added.

Overmars has played as a winger for some of Europe’s top football teams, including Ajax, Arsenal and Barcelona, as well as the Dutch national team.

Ajax currently rule the Eredivisie, the highest level of professional football in the Netherlands, and are the defending national champions.

The resignation comes as a sexual misconduct scandal dominates the news and has drawn national attention in the Netherlands after allegations of widespread sexual misconduct emerged on a popular TV show. Experts said issues surrounding consent and sexual misconduct have long been ignored in the Netherlands.

Leen Meijaard, chairman of the Ajax supervisory board, called Overmars “probably the best football manager Ajax have had”. But, he added, after consulting an expert and the team’s general manager, they concluded it was not an option for him to continue in his role.

“It’s devastating for the women who had to deal with this behavior. When we heard the news, we took immediate action,” Meijaard said. “Unfortunately, he really crossed the line.”

The world of football has recently experienced several harassment scandals. The leader of a program run by world football’s governing body FIFA to bring together the luminaries of the game, FIFA Legends, was convicted of sexually harassing a subordinate in 2019. In 2020, female soccer players, including some who played in Haiti’s national soccer program, accused senior soccer officials of compel players to have sex.

Edwin van der Sar, a former star goalkeeper who is currently Ajax’s chief executive and played with Overmars at Ajax in the 1990s, called the situation “appalling” and said the club would pay more attention to misconduct issues in the near future.

“A safe sport and work climate is very important,” said van der Sar. “We are working on something very wonderful here at Ajax, so this news will also be a blow to everyone who cares about Ajax.”
