Seriously? Another Hitler analogy? I could write half a dozen letters to the editor – every day – in response to what I read on this opinion page, but that wouldn’t really be a lifetime.

Karen Gardner’s latest column, “The lessons of history(January 12) demands an answer. It lays out the basic history of the Holocaust and rightly identifies the prejudices, stereotypes, scapegoating, lies and defamation of Jews, which have formed the hideous mindset of all that has happened. happened.

Ironically, much later in her column, Gardner demonstrates the biases, stereotypes, scapegoating, lies, and defamation of the half of the country she considers a group worthy of distortion and denunciation – the Republicans. Here are some of his eye-rollers: “descending into a group of spineless sycophants”, those “who resort to illegal power grabs”, “the budding autocrats”, those “who have ceased all efforts to make the lives of their followers, or someone else, better.

Then, for the umpteenth time, we get the sweeping, ominous, and certain prediction: “If they (the Republicans) win midterm and take the House or the Senate or both, we’ll be looking at the end of democracy.” This is how it is, as it was so many years ago in Germany.

Ms. Gardener never actually said, “Republicans are equal to Nazis,” but the implication of her words is pretty close, and the implication is nonsense. In his book “Rules for Radicals”, Saul Alinsky advised the left to “relentlessly define your opponent”. He didn’t mean fairly. He meant to distort, vilify, stereotype, scapegoat and lie because… what does it matter? The cause is just.

Ms. Gardner’s rhetoric is standard fare on this opinion page; but it really shouldn’t be.
