LONDON — The unpredictability of this year’s awards season continued on Thursday when nominees were announced for this year’s EE British Academy Film Awards, Britain’s equivalent of the Oscars.

The science fiction epic of Denis Villeneuve »Dunes“was nominated for Best Picture at the awards, commonly referred to as the BAFTAs, just like”Don’t look up“, the satire of climate change with Leonardo DiCaprio, and the tense western of Jane Campion”The power of the dog.”

These films will compete with “Belfast“Kenneth Branagh’s black-and-white film based on his childhood in Northern Ireland, and Paul Thomas Anderson’s ’70s coming-of-age romance”Licorice Pizza.”

But of the directors of those films, only Campion and Anderson were also nominated for Best Director. They will compete in this category against several lesser-known directors in the United States: Aleem Khanthe director of the British film “After Love”; French director Julia Ducournau for her Cannes-winning horror film “Titanium”; Ryusuke Hamaguchi, the Japanese director ofdrive my car”; and Audrey Diwan, the French director of the abortion drama “Happening,” who was the unexpected winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival last year.

The BAFTA nominations, which were announced on a YouTube broadcast, are often seen as a proxy for the Oscars, due to an overlap between the constituencies for the two awards.

“Dune” earned 11 BAFTA nominations, the most overall, though many were in technical categories like costume design and production. “The Power of the Dog” earned eight nominations, the second highest, including three in the acting categories.

This year’s list also includes acting nominees who may not be on the Oscars radar. Best Actor nominees, for example, include Stephen Graham for “Boiling point“, a British film set behind the scenes of a restaurant, and Adeel Akhtar for British romance”Ali and Ava“, as well as big names like Will Smith (“King Richard), Benedict Cumberbatch (“The Power of the Dog”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“Don’t Look Up”) and Mahershala Ali (“swan song”).

The Best Actress nominees also include British actress Joanna Scanlan for her role in “After Loveabout a white Muslim convert who discovers her husband’s secret past, as well as Lady Gaga (“Gucci House”), Alana Haim (“Licorice Pizza”), Renate Reinvests (“Worst person in the world”) and Tessa Thompson (“Who passed”).

Amanda Berry, chief executive of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, which awards the awards, said in an interview that the diversity of this year’s nominees was partly due to changes introduced in 2020 to encourage voters to watch more widely among the nominated films. Before casting their ballot, voters must now watch a random selection of 15 films via an online portal, to ensure they are not only focusing on the highest-profile films, Berry explained.

The degree of overlap between BAFTA and Oscar nominees will soon become clear. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is should reveal the nominees for this year’s Oscars on Tuesday.

The BAFTA winners are set to be announced on March 13 at a ceremony at London’s Royal Albert Hall, and Berry said she expects the event to return to its usual, pre-pandemic format. Last year, the nominees assisted by video linkbut Berry said she expected the awards to be presented in person in March and the red carpet glamor would be back.
