What hanging out Nancy Reagan's past on social media says about us

Nancy Reagan, the late former first lady with the diminutive figure and grandmother’s slogan against the Uzi drug wars of the 80s, was doing very well resting in peace before Ben Shapiro’s sister decided to call out her name. for Madonna.

First of all, I know what you’re thinking, and I think it too: Ben Shapiro has a sister?! For years I assumed that Shapiro – like Jared Kushner, Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz and this guy ― was a Republican war robot made of hatred and bigotry, whose sole mission was to infiltrate the minds of young white men. But I guess a weathered Birkenstock and a discarded cheerleading boot kept it running just long enough to create not just Shapiro but a sister.

On December 9, Abby Shapiro decided to compare a holy woman of God to Nancy Reagan in an attempt to shame her:

All because a woman with agency and autonomy posted images of his 63-year-old scantily clad body. Madonna was presented as the opposite of how a demure white woman of a certain age behaves or should behave.

What Abby Shapiro forgot to do was check the Carfax. If she had, she would have known that Nancy Reagan, like most of us, had a past.

A sexual (gasp) (gasp!) pass.

According to an excerpt from “Nancy Reagan: The Unauthorized Biography” by Kitty Kelley published in 1992, Nancy had all the youth before settling down with old Ron. I won’t publish that excerpt here, but it claimed that a grown woman had engaged in consensual sex acts with grown men.

Twitter has struggled to drag Nancy Reagan’s ghost on social media. It’s safe to say that the intent of Abby Shapiro’s tweet (classic vs. trashy) blew up in her face. But the backlash and ensuing tweets showed exactly how many of us feel when we learn that a button-down Republican, poster boy for those who aspire to be boring, was busy before she became Mrs. Reagan.

Can you hear this noise? It is the bursting of the illusion of purity that Nancy did not ask for but in which she totally played. That’s what America does. It takes the fun out of everything. He only asks that women be one-sided and straight cisgender men… well, they can do whatever they want, really. How Neanderthals of us.

For some reason, we are obsessed with women’s sexual pasts. There are gossip columns filled with speculation about who is dating whom. Currently, I know that Kim Kardashian is dating Pete something or other, and I hate to know about it. I do not want to know it. I can’t not know that. But Nancy Reagan almost serves a dual purpose here; it’s an interesting study of sexism, ageism, culture, and the right-wing’s relentless shame of women’s sexuality.

America is rooted in bitch shaming and the patriarchal premise that no woman can have more than one sex partner, and said sex could only have happened in high school and boy had to live in another city and preferably in another state. We are so concerned with female virtue that even some women have adopted the male-centric view of chastity just to shame other women.

It’s part of the American principle, so much so that it’s in the Ten Commandments: “You shall not covet Cardi B songs.” We are so concerned about each woman’s sexual history that it is deemed appropriate to report it. What does Kamala Harris’ love life have to do with her being vice president? Not a single thing. She has been married since 2013, yet when she was on the presidential campaign trail, several publications ran articles like “Kamala Harris’ Boyfriends and Dating History: Who Has She Dated? and “Roseanne Barr says Kamala Harris “slept all the way”.We are obsessed with knowing the dating history and number of women because we believe it tells us something about their moral standing. We believe this gives us insight into who they are.

We also believe it puts them at a cafeteria table where they are not seated with us. And while I’d love to say we’re above the cafeteria politics that permeated our high school years, unfortunately, we’re not. America is basically a nation of pimply teenagers in ill-fitting clothes trying to claim “cool” while whispering rumors about someone we barely know. We hope to take the attention away from ourselves, if only to direct it to the person we think should be shamed.

“For the root of this, we have to go to the original tweet that was meant to shame Madonna,” said Michelle Hope, a scholar, educator and activist whose life’s work consists of, but is not limited to, healthy conversations about sex. “I think we also have to look at who Madonna was up against: Nancy Reagan. Look at Ronald Reagan’s and Nancy’s views on the AIDS epidemic and look at what Madonna did at that time; she put her career stakes.

“We got lost in the hypersexualization of Nancy Reagan and we lost the big picture, the hypocrisy,” she said. “We lost hundreds of thousands to AIDS under her and her husband’s presidency.”

It’s true. The Reagan administration saw firsthand the devastation caused by AIDS. In reality, the first reported AIDS-related death in the United States was months after Ronald Reagan took office, yet he took about four years and 5,000 deaths for the 40th president to even mention the word “AIDS,” let alone recognize those who have lost their lives to the virus. But don’t let me say it ― let’s hear it from a left communist rag Like teen vogue:

In an obituary, Slate remembered Nancy as Reagan’s “protector” and the “greatest guardian of her husband’s reputation”. With that kind of influence over her husband, Nancy probably could have encouraged the president to talk about the disease that was killing their country’s citizens. It’s not like she was shy about the problems plaguing the country at that time.

So yes, be like Nancy Reagan, which is like most conservative women, who have a sexual history they don’t talk about. You know, those people who suppress that part of themselves that once lived without judgment, only to judge later. Shame those who live out loud, as a way to prop yourself up.

Because that’s all that was going on here. Abby Shapiro needed to feel good about herself. The only problem was that she posted two women whose lives weren’t really that far apart, and somewhere between those women who were supposed to be diametrically opposed, you could find us, clutching beads and looking online to see who had the best price on fainting couches.
