If there was a moment for Tucker-Carlson to encourage even one person to consider getting the Covid-19 vaccine, it was Wednesday night.

Instead, the Fox News host stayed on the mark and refused to do so.

Before we get to Carlson’s interview with the family of a man who was denied a heart transplant because he wasn’t vaccinated, let’s review his story.

DJ Fergusson was diagnosed with an arrhythmia four years ago and now needs a heart transplant. But he won’t in the foreseeable future. That’s because the 31-year-old Massachusetts father of two — soon to be three — refuse to get the Covid vaccine, which is needed to receive the transplant. His family says he was due for a heart, but Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston took him off the transplant list due to his unvaccinated status.

Yet he refuses to get vaccinated even though it would put him back on the list.

“It’s a bit against his basic principles – he doesn’t believe in it,” noted his father David.

“It’s not an anti-vaccine”, his mother, Tracey, Recount ABC News, in what has become a familiar assertion for many who oppose the Covid vaccine. “He has all his shots, and he is an informed patient who is worried about his current heart attack.”

On Tuesday, Ferguson underwent seven hours of open-heart surgery to receive a mechanical heart pump, which is expected to keep him alive for up to five years. But this has a cost.

“For the foreseeable future, he won’t be able to shower, he won’t be able to swim,” his father told ABC. “He won’t be able to have a life.”

For his part, Carlson at Many times to throw doubt to the effectiveness of the vaccine, often with the help of anti-vaxx bullshit geyser Alex Berensonwho tuesday tells Carlson viewers vaccines are “dangerous” and says people shouldn’t take them.

The following night, Carlson welcomed Ferguson’s parents and partner, who is pregnant. It was Carlson’s most tragic interview to date. On the one hand, Ferguson’s situation is pretty sad, but the fact that it’s preventable makes it even sadder. On the other hand, Carlson might have suggested that maybe – just maybe – Ferguson should reconsider his position.

But no. Instead, the most-watched cable news host essentially encouraged Ferguson’s absence by calling the hospital’s decision “a moral atrocity.”

Carlson prefaced his interview with the family by rehashing Ferguson’s story and stating, “To be clear, there is no medical justification for this rule.”

But of course there are. As medical ethicist Dr. Arthur Caplan Explain to CBS News, “Organs are rare, we’re not going to distribute them to someone who has a low chance of living while others who are vaccinated have a better chance of surviving after surgery.”

As he has done before, Carlson also noted that myocarditis – inflammation of the heart muscle – is a potential side effect of the Covid vaccine. But this happens extremely rarely. According to a report, among 192.4 million people vaccinated, only 1,626 cases of heart inflammation were observed. It’s one in 118,330 vaccines, with the highest rates seen in adolescent males. Nothing cases have been fatal.

Carlson didn’t mention any of that, of course. Moreover, he did not note that myocarditis is more likely be a side effect of getting Covid than getting the Covid vaccine. And as has been made clear many times, being vaccinated against Covid reduces the risk of severe symptoms and illness if infected.

It should also be noted that vaccinated and boosted people are five times less likely to obtain the highly contagious variant of Omicron. This information seems relevant, especially for people with serious illnesses like DJ Ferguson.

Ferguson’s parents provided Carlson with an update on their son’s ordeal, prompting the host to call him “awful,” and with precision.

“To have this hanging over our heads at the very last minute after passing all the tests,” Ferguson’s partner Heather said. “After getting his letter saying he was accepted on the transplant list, it’s so disheartening that they’re hanging this over his head and, you know, just at the last moment.”

“Did someone come to your aid?” asked Carlson. “It’s such a moral atrocity. Has anyone sided with you?

“Not really, other than the fundraiser we did for ourselves,” Heather replied.

“I’m so sad to hear that,” Carlson replied in a low voice. “I think everyone watching feels the same. And we’re definitely rooting for you.

He said goodbye to them and got rid of them. “Well, that’s a heartbreaking story,” he said, before teasing his next segment about “some of the good things happening in the United States.”

Carlson didn’t follow up on his guest’s fundraiser reference, but it can be found here.

If he wanted to, Carlson could have addressed Ferguson directly on the air saying that, given his prognosis and the stakes involved – two children, a partner with a third on the way and two apparently very kind – he should think about putting aside his reservations about the vaccine.

Obviously, I have no idea if such a plea would have influenced Ferguson. But it’s just hard to understand how someone in Tucker Carlson’s position on Wednesday didn’t dare to suggest getting vaccinated might be the best course of action. It could have literally meant the difference between life and death for one person.

Maybe even more.
