The third injections of coronavirus vaccines have significantly reduced the risk of people with weakened immune systems being hospitalized with Covid, the The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported on Thursday, strengthening the case for additional doses in this group.

The Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines were about 88% effective against hospitalizations in immunocompromised people who received a third dose, compared to 69% effective in immunocompromised people with just two doses, the agency said.

The data comes from a study of people treated at 21 US hospitals from August to mid-December, a time when the Delta variant was dominant. But the third doses have also been shown to strengthen people’s defenses against the severe consequences of Omicron, even if the overall protection against this variant is weaker.

The latest CDC study also added to the considerable evidence that the third doses strengthen the defenses of people with a stronger immune system. Three doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines were about 97% effective in preventing hospitalizations in this group, compared to 82% effective in two-dose recipients.

But there have been fewer studies on the real impact of extra doses in people with weakened immune systems. These people — the CDC estimates there are about seven million nationwide — may be born with a faulty immune system or, in other cases, have their immune defenses weakened due to treatments for diseases like Cancer.

Many of them produce fewer antibodies in response to vaccination or infection, leaving them susceptible to the virus and at higher risks of severe disease.

In August, federal regulators authorized a third dose of Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna at least four weeks after the second dose for some immunocompromised people. Health authorities considered the extra dose for this group to be part of their primary vaccination series, rather than a booster shot.

In October, the CDC said that immunocompromised people may also receive a booster shot from the beginning of 2022 — a fourth dose of vaccine — as a means of strengthening or restoring protection. But some of these people said that pharmacies or hospitals refused them the extra doses.

For people who are immunocompromised with a single injection of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, the CDC advises a booster dose of Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech injections.

The new study evaluated around 1,100 adults with weakened immune systems and 1,900 other adults. The CDC said that future studies should examine the protection offered by additional doses against the Omicron variant in immunocompromised people, as well as the durability of this protection.
