Of the four teams still standing in conference championship play, the 49ers have the least impressive offensive stats. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo didn’t throw for a touchdown in the playoffs and had just 303 yards in two games. San Francisco’s only two offensive touchdowns came on the ground, and the special teams were the difference maker in their victory over the Packers in the divisional round.
But the 49ers offense compares well to the Rams defense. Their intense offense and short passing helps dilute the fast passing skills of Aaron Donald, Los Angeles’ top defensive tackle. In their two regular season meetings, the 49ers ran the ball 75 times. In the second half and overtime of their Week 18 game, the 49ers rushed for over 100 yards.
In his two wins over the Rams this season, Garoppolo has exploited Rams linebackers, completing 29 of 36 passes for 320 yards and three scores while throwing to midfield, so also watch Garoppolo target tight end George Kittle and others on these roads in order to neutralize Jalen Ramsey, the Rams’ best cornerback.
