A fire at a nightclub in the Cameroonian capital, Yaoundé, in the early hours of Sunday left at least 16 people dead and eight others seriously injured, according to news agencies.
Fireworks used inside the venue, Livs Night Club, consumed the ceiling of the building and caused two explosions which caused a stampede, the government said in a statement calling the deaths a “tragedy”, according to the Agence France-Presse news agency.
Video taken outside the nightclub, which is in the upscale Bastos district and close to many foreign embassies, showed charred items on Sunday but no obvious signs of damage to the building’s facade. The fire happened very quickly and happened shortly after 2 a.m., said a security officer who witnessed the scene, according to Agence France-Presse.
The fire occurred as Cameroon, which is on the west coast of central Africa, is hosting the Africa Cup of Nations this year, a tournament of football teams representing 24 countries from across the continent.
