Spring training due to start in just over three weeks and the teams still very distant on the conclusion of a new work agreement, Major League Baseball and its players’ union met on Monday and planned to meet again on Tuesday.

Monday’s meeting at the players’ union offices in Manhattan – just the second big bargaining session since the start of the lockdown on December 2 — lasted more than two hours and included what an MLB official called a spirited back-and-forth. The small group included, among others, union officials, such as chief negotiator Bruce Meyer and a representative of Andrew Miller’s top players, as well as MLB officials, such as Colorado Rockies owner Dick Monfort and chairman of the league’s labor committee. , and Dan Halem, MLB chief negotiator.

During the previous bargaining session, which was held on January 13, MLB made a proposal to the union during a virtual rally that it said addressed some of the players’ concerns about charging more. their young talents early.

On Monday, the union officially rejected that offer — it didn’t believe some of MLB’s ideas would accomplish what the league claimed — and made its own counteroffer. The union dropped, for the first time, its offer to allow some players (those with five years of service) to achieve free agency based on age (30½ and later 29½) rather than the decades-old standard based on service time. alone. The union also changed its previous proposal to reduce some of the revenue sharing between the teams.

MLB said that allowing players to reach free will sooner and altering the money distributed between teams were areas he didn’t want to touch.

Overall, the union has sought a series of improvements, with the aim of helping young players, improving competition between teams, limiting the manipulation of service time and injecting more expense. The league, however, believes players have a fair system with no salary caps and sees it as a matter of wealth distribution – which star players command disproportionately more and more than others.

As of Monday, both sides believe they have made recent offers that have moved in the other’s direction. How much, however, depends on the point of view. There’s still work to be done, but the pace of discussions — with the countdown to the start of spring training and possibly the season on time — is picking up.
