Fox News Contributor Karl Rove author of a dazzling editorial in the the wall street journal on the first anniversary of the Capitol Riot of January 6. The former adviser George W. Bush was particularly aimed at Republican “apologists” who downplayed the riot.
“I speak squarely to Republicans who for a year have excused the actions of rioters who stormed the Capitol, disrupted Congress as it received the Electoral College results and violently attempted to overturn the election,” he wrote, asking at one point, “What if the other side did?”
He concluded by stating, “There can be no slowing down of what happened nor any absolution for those who planned, encouraged and aided the attempt to overthrow our democracy. Love of country demands nothing less. This is real patriotism.
Later that day, Rove appeared on Fox News in prime time, where he spoke about inmates receiving stimulus checks and the Republican Party’s future election prospects. However, neither he nor the guest host Lawrence Jones raised the subject of the editorial. Additionally, neither man brought up Jan. 6 during the segment.
Rove’s piece in the Newspaper is notable for being one of the strongest Republican condemnations not only of the riot, but of attempts to downplay its significance. This would include some Fox News personalities, who sought to downplay the riot as anything other than an effort to overthrow American democracy. Additionally, many right-wing outlets have more widely downplayed and even outright denied that donald trump incited the crowd that day.
