CNN Jake Taper spent days clutching his pearls against the president’s “austere” tone that of Joe Biden suffrage speech, ironically placing him in the moral sewer whose invocation so offends him.

It’s not just Tapper. Almost all of the political news media shamed themselves after the speech in one way or another. If they don’t fan the “tough” tone and potential offense given to members of the Senate, they treat the push for the vote as if it were a game.

If I had a penny for every political journalist who request what is the “political risk” if Biden were to take a stand and be embarrassed, I would put the nickels in a sock and beat them with it.

(Editor’s note: Mr. Christopher is joking and won’t beat anyone with a sock full of nickels.)

But Tapper is particularly disappointing for the dishonesty he has brought to the exercise, the privilege he has shown in doing it, and the influence he wields with his colleagues.

This group includes me. Tapper and I covered the president by Barack Obama White House at the same time, and then, as now, he boasted a reputation for objectivity that translated into an ability to infuriate or delight both sides of the political spectrum in equal measure. Although we often disagreed, it was something I admired him for, and it built a reservoir of credibility for him that served him well afterwards. donald trump got elected.

So it was particularly infuriating to see Tapper’s immediate reaction to the speech, which featured audible astonishment at the president’s most compelling illustration of the stakes involved.

As Biden still left the stage, Tapper turned to Jeff Zeleny to say, “And, Jeff, President Biden has described this fight — which involves two bills and a major controversial change to Senate rules — in terms very raw. Martin Luther King versus segregationist King George Wallace, Abraham Lincoln or Confederate President Jefferson Davis!

Don’t discount the disgusting framework of a centuries-old fight against discrimination as being about two bills and a Senate rule, because it’s crucial to the rest of Tapper’s schtick, in which he literally has laughed as he described the historical touchstones cited by the president.

And don’t forget that seconds after that speech, with all its power and the weight of history behind it, Tapper’s first question was “Will this language convince the skeptics on his side that he has to convince like Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema? from Arizona? “

This philosophy continued until his Wednesday interview with senator Dick Durbin, during which Tapper pulled off the simplest task in the world: getting a Democrat to undermine a Democratic president.

To set the stage, here’s the part of the president’s speech that bothered Tapper so much — and many others in the media.

And here’s something every senator and every American should remember: History has never been kind to those who sided with voter suppression at the expense of voter rights. And it will be even less benevolent for those who side with electoral subversion.

So I ask every elected official in America: how do you want to be remembered?

At important points in the story, they present a choice: Do you want to be the si- – on Dr. King’s side or George Wallace’s? Do you want to side with John Lewis or Bull Connor? Do you want to side with Abraham Lincoln or Jefferson Davis?

It’s time to decide to defend our elections, to defend our democracy.

And so, in order to extract a “maybe the president went too far” whimper from Durbin, Tapper referred to this section of the speech with supreme smugness and dishonesty:

But you compare or Biden compares and you don’t criticize, the idea of a lawmaker cutting the number of days for early voting from 15 to 10 or wanting voters to show photo ID before voting. You compare it to Bull Connor literally throwing dogs at civil rights protesters. George Wallace who said segregation today, segregation forever — I’m paraphrasing. Or Jefferson Davis, the president of the treacherous Confederacy.

I mean, isn’t that a bit rough?

Yes, Durbin should have thrown that back in Tapper’s face, with mustard. He should have pointed out that the whole point of this passage was to be blunt – rightly so. It’s life.

And Tapper can no longer retreat behind the mantle of just being a questioning guy after spending the Trump years making it clear he had no scruples to moralize when the object has been Somethingg he really took care. It was a choice, and his visceral reaction after the speech underscores it. That’s what Tapper really thinks.

Allow me to correct my colleague on a few points.

Number one: The fight for the right to vote is not “a matter of two bills and a major and controversial change to Senate rules”, it is a fight that goes back hundreds of years and has been fought with the blood of countless heroes.

Number Two: The current wave of voter restrictions that suffrage advocates are fighting is not about “a lawmaker cutting the number of days for early voting from 15 to 10 or requiring voters to show photo ID. before voting.

Tapper knows that, and if he needs a reminder, Jen Psaki gave one A few days ago.

And it’s just a drop in the ocean, according to at The Brennan Center:

Between Jan. 1 and Dec. 7, at least 19 states passed 34 laws restricting access to voting. More than 440 bills containing provisions restricting voting access were introduced in 49 states during the 2021 legislative sessions. These numbers are extraordinary: State legislatures enacted far more restrictive election laws in 2021 than any year since the Brennan Center began tracking election legislation in 2011. More than a third of all restrictive election laws enacted since then have been passed this year. And in a new trend this year, lawmakers have introduced bills to allow partisan actors to interfere with election processes or even reject election results entirely.

And most importantly, number 3: President Biden was NOT comparing people like Joe Manchin Where Kirsten Sinema with people like Bull Connor and George Wallace and Jefferson Davis. Hearing Tapper say that shocks the conscience because he must know better, he just must.

“Compare” is a word that is misused and overused in politics. Not all invocations are a comparison. President Biden was not saying or even implying that the opponents of the filibuster reform and/or voting rights bills are the same as Bull Connor, or even that they are substantially similar to the one of the historical villains cited by Biden. And just Jake Tapper at know that.

What the president was saying, explicitly and implicitly, is that no matter the explanation or the motivation, history will only remember two sides, and those who don’t support one side are necessarily helping the other. In other words, to do nothing in the face of a threat is to help that threat.

Or to put it yet another way, I’m going to hand over to Jake Tapper for a second:

Is Tapper saying that the security guards are literally the same as the man leading the attack, or even similar, or even share the man’s feelings in every way? That’s not how I took it, but I guess that’s how Jake Tapper would take it if Joe Biden said so.

By making this dishonest argument, Tapper has unfortunately placed himself on the wrong side of history, just as those who failed to oppose the Bull Connors and Jefferson Davises and George Wallaces did.

But worse than that, Tapper aided and comforted the enemies of suffrage by shifting focus to the hurt feelings of the (perhaps well-meaning) filibusters who have always existed at these times in our history—those who don’t. Were not racist, just concerned about states rights or maybe totally supportive of civil rights, thought these niggers would accomplish more if they weren’t so mad all the time.

At worst, Tapper recast the suffrage debate in trivial terms and used his considerable credibility and influence to promote a ready-made excuse for “good men” to “watch and do nothing.”

Again, it’s not just Tapper, but he’s far more influential than other media personalities, and I expected more of him because he’s so often demonstrated an understanding of the consequences of ignoring historical echoes. .

Shame on him.
