Novak Djokovic, the world’s No. 1 tennis player and most skeptical of vaccinations in his sport, said on Tuesday he would play at this month’s Australian Open after receiving a medical exemption.

Defending men’s tournament champion Djokovic revealed his plans in a post on his Instagram account alongside a photo of himself with luggage on an airport tarmac. “I’m heading down Under with an exemption clearance,” he wrote. “Let’s go in 2022.”

Tournament officials have confirmed in a report Tuesday that Djokovic had received a medical exemption after a review of his application by two independent panels, a procedure which strongly suggests that he remains unvaccinated.

Djokovic’s participation in the Australian Open, the first major tournament of the tennis season, was in doubt last week, when he would have withdrawn from an event In Sydney. Djokovic, who has had Covid, has always refused to say if he had been vaccinated or intended to be.

According to Australian Open rules, all participants must be vaccinated against the coronavirus or apply for and receive a medical exemption a panel of independent experts.

In December, Djokovic’s father, Srdjan Djokovic, raised new questions about his son’s participation and his immunization status, when he was suggested that Djokovic was unlikely to play in Australia “under these blackmail and conditions”.

The comments came just days before Novak Djokovic was named a participant in the Australian Open by tournament organizers when they released the entry list for the main draw.

“Defending champion Djokovic will play for an incredible 10th Australian Open trophy – and a men’s record 21st major singles title – and will be the favorite in a draw that features 49 of the top 50 in the world,” said the tournament said in a statement. declaration announcing the pitch.

But Craig Tiley, managing director of Tennis Australia, which hosts the tournament, was quick to make it clear that Djokovic’s inclusion in the entry list was not confirmation that he had agreed to be vaccinated, or that he would be allowed entry into Australia, which has some of the world’s strictest coronavirus protocols for foreigners.

“Of course everyone goes on the entry list,” Tiley said in a interview on local television at the time. “It’s not an engagement list on who exactly is in the draw. It will be several weeks from now, when the actual roster and draw will be finalized for the Australian Open.

The Open draw will take place on January 10. The tournament starts on January 17th.
