Dan Reeves, a former Dallas Cowboys half-back who as a coach guided teams to four Super Bowls (although he lost them all), died at his home in Atlanta on Saturday. He was 77 years old.

The cause was complications from dementia, according to a family release.

Reeves played and coached with the Dallas Cowboys during an exceptional time as they won two Super Bowls, one when he was a player and the other when he was the offensive coordinator, working for the coach Tom Landry. After several seasons as Landry’s assistant, he was hired as head coach of the Broncos in 1981, replacing Red Miller.

In 12 seasons in Denver, his teams were 110-73-1 and were among the best in the American Football Conference. Led by quarterback John Elway, they lost the Super Bowl in 1987, 1988 and 1990 to the New York Giants, Washington Redskins and San Francisco 49ers.

Reeves occasionally clashed with Elway over the Broncos’ attacking plan and disagreed with team owner Pat Bowlen over control of the team.

After an 8-8 season in 1992, Bowlen sacked Reeves.

“When you own a football team,” Reeves said afterwards. “You should be able to handle the ball club the way you want. Bowlen said he could have renewed Reeves’ contract, but that in a year “we would both have been miserable and at each other’s throats.”

Reeves was hired in early 1993 by the Giants, who fired Ray Handley after a 6-10 season.

“When you’re gone and you’ve lost three Super Bowls and that’s what people will remember you the most, that’s what makes you tick,” Reeves said at the press conference where he spoke. been presented.

A full obituary will be released shortly.
