CDC says to avoid cruises, regardless of vaccination

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday raised its Covid-19 warning level for cruise ships to 4, the highest, and issued a blunt warning: “Avoid cruise travel, regardless of the status vaccine. “

The move came as the number of epidemics on ships has increased in recent weeks, forcing some ports to refuse ships. Dozens of people on a Royal Caribbean International ship last week tested positive after leaving Fort Lauderdale, Florida and a Carnival Cruise Line ship returned to Miami Sunday after positive tests among “a small number on board”.

Calling the CDC’s decision “puzzled,” the cruise industry trade group Cruise Lines International Association said in a statement that the number of cases on board was a very small minority of the total population and that “the The majority of cases were asymptomatic or mild in nature, placing little or no burden on medical resources on board or ashore.

Ahead of the CDC’s warning on Thursday, Royal Caribbean Group, one of the largest cruise lines, said its ships had carried 1.1 million passengers since it restarted operations in the United States in June, with 1,745 people tested positive. While the majority of passengers had mild or no symptoms, 41 people were hospitalized.

“Omicron has a big short-term impact on everyone, but many observers see it as a major step towards an endemic rather than a Covid-19 epidemic,” said Richard D. Fain, CEO of Royal Caribbean Cruises.

Despite the increase in cruise ship cases, the Mexican government announced this week that it would allow cruise ships to dock at its ports even if passengers have tested positive for the coronavirus, and also allow asymptomatic travelers to disembark on its shores.

The announcement came after Jalisco state authorities last week denied two cruise ships infected with epidemics allowing passengers or crew to disembark in Puerto Vallarta, a popular tourist destination on the Pacific coast of Mexico.

“Our country maintains its policy of solidarity and fraternity, as well as the principle of non-discrimination towards all”, declared the government. said in a press release. “The health and tourism authorities remain attentive to providing the necessary medical assistance to those who visit us.”

Coronavirus wreaked havoc on the cruise industry at the start of the pandemic, infecting hundreds of cruise passengers and workers and forcing the industry to shut down for 18 months. To start sailing, cruise ships had to accept the CDC Conditional navigation order, which is valid until January 15th.

On most cruises departing from U.S. ports, nearly all crew members and adult passengers are vaccinated and masks are required indoors, except when passengers are eating or drinking.

Among the security measures required by the ordinance – beyond the submission of the daily number of coronavirus cases – is a prevention and control plan for each cruise ship.

Most cruise lines do not publicly announce the number of coronavirus cases identified during crossings, but all cruise ships operating to and from U.S. ports are required to submit daily figures to the CDC, which uses a reporting system. color coded to inform the public if the number of cases is above or below the agency’s investigation threshold.

Currently, 88 cruise ships are being monitored by the CDC due to coronavirus cases reported on board. The agency does not publicly specify the number of cases on each vessel.
