We Americans really don’t need anyone to help fuel the division or hyper-partisanship. We’re already pretty good at it. A CBS News chart on a single question in a single poll won’t be the last straw in breaking the bank. Gadsden The flag is back, let’s be real.

But the result of an action is not the same as the intention behind it, or even its role in a larger picture. A single arrow might not stop conquering Leonidas, but that doesn’t mean Xerxes wasn’t trying to cast some shade. Or that a thousand similar arrows did not create it. And the arrow in this case is aimed directly at the archer’s own premise.

If you don’t like the arrow analogy, consider it sluggish. Let’s choose it, okay?

A CBS News / YouGov poll this week sounded the alarm bells about political divisions and the potential for violence. For various obvious reasons as of January, this concern is mostly about right-wing violence, although those fears are basically going both ways. Republicans fear that a softball practice could be brought down with intent to kill just as Democrats fear MAGA will violently storm Congress, attacking cops with American flags, while chasing Democrats to stop the peaceful transfer of power.

The survey asked several questions about mood and sentiment in the country. But, also asked respondents to reflect on the hectic first week of 2021.

The results were not sunny. For example, Republicans and Democrats In large numbers see themselves as an “enemy” to “destroy” their “way of life”.

But a sexier question has been asked about the riots themselves. Or whatever you want to call them. And in fact, that was the question: what is To do you call what happened?

Take a look at the CBS News graphic included in their article:

Poll courtesy of CBS News / YouGov

Uh-oh. Not good. While Democrats bravely describe the events of that day with the word “insurgency,” Republicans cowardly avoid it in favor of “patriotism.” To the right? Isn’t that what he says?

Although… The numbers don’t quite stop at 100%, so I guess we’ll have to look at the exact questions.

For every sentence in that picture, the question was whether it matched or not. For example: “Thinking of the people who broke into the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021. Would you describe their actions as an insurgency? “

CBS YouGov poll graphic insurgency

The results are therefore based on whether the respondent answered yes or no with each sentence, none excluding the others. You can say yes to “the insurgency” and to “patriotism”. You know, if you’re not good at definitions.

So far, so good? Good. Here is the thing. This splashy, shareable graphic doesn’t include all of the phrases respondents were asked to agree or disagree with. Two were left out. One of them was quite important.

I took the liberty of revising the graph, using the YES / NO questions rather than the party ID, and to include what was excluded.

CBS News / YouGov poll results graph - attached

the High the answer was not in the graphic: a demonstration that went too far, with 76% adults who say yes.

The figures by party are also revealing. As to whether they would describe it as “a demonstration that has gone too far”, 80% Republicans said yes, and 69% some Democrats have said yes. These are huge majorities and only 11 points apart.

On the advisability of qualifying it as an “insurrection”, 85% Democrats said yes, 21% republicans and 56% of the Independents. So divided on this choice of word.

The issue of the missing line item on the graph is not as trivial as you might think. We are talking about intention here. Perhaps you will better understand why by watching this dreadful report from Monday. CBS Evening News.

Do you see it now? Hear it?

Listen, first of all, you don’t have to help bad news to be bad. The poll result had positive sides, but it wasn’t Well news by any stretch. You don’t need to improve the poll result.

But CBS did it anyway. This on-air report leaves you with the impression that Democrats are all using the term insurgency correctly for The Insurrection ™ (which was caused by The Big Lie ™ [patent pending] by the way) and that Republicans are both happy and in denial about The Insurrection ™, and super jazzy for the next one.

Insurrection? Uncontrollable manifestation? No more? Both? Does it matter?

The Encyclopedia Britannica defines an insurgency as “an organized and generally violent act of revolt or rebellion against an established government or governmental authority of a nation-state or other political entity by a group of its citizens or subjects; also, any act of engaging in such a revolt.

By comparison, Merriam-Webster defines “out of control” as “out of control”.

I am not here to correct anyone who uses the CNN endorsed mark, but I will point out that Britannica goes on to say that an insurgency “may be initiated or provoked by an act of sedition, which is an incitement to revolt or rebellion. “. So sedition seems less contradicts by “out of the box” and might work even better in this list. Nonetheless, the poll said “insurgency”.

What is at issue is the fact that, in the report on political division and violence, the description of January 6 which had the more the agreement has been omitted, and CBS Evening News it sounded like multiple choice.

Maybe with Donald trump always spinning the same threads and the GOP not wanting to abandon this ship, the die is cast. Maybe Democrats and Republicans hate each other and there’s nothing there is to do about it. To the right? Maybe Republicans think Democrats want to ruin their lives, and Democrats think Republicans want to ruin theirs, and the two will never meet in peace?

May be.

But maybe not to help when CBS News shyly plays with its own poll result to put the most controversial parts in the spotlight and the most matched parts in the trash.

It is worth asking. Maybe next week there will be a poll on this. Maybe CBS News and YouGov can poll people next week on how the media has handled this week. I bet it would be interesting.

If it’s accurately reported, of course.
