With support and hard work, Americans came together to defeat Trump. This has unleashed countless attacks on democracy. On January 6, a mob attacked and violently ransacked the U.S. Capitol with the intention of overturning the 2020 presidential election results.

It is a pivotal period for the survival of our democracy. In each midterm election since 1946, the president’s party has lost an average of 25 seats in the United States House. A slim majority stands between us and an authoritarian takeover. Voting rights, reproductive rights, sustainable future, ACA could all be at stake if we lose it. It is not a partisan issue.

The 1% wants to destroy democracy. They don’t feel responsible for the well-being of the 99% or the damage they’ve done to our planet. They fuel division to distract people and prevent groups from forming coalitions. They don’t want the masses to come together and threaten their way of life.

Actions speak louder than words. What do past actions and current conduct tell us? No Republican voted for the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). Enacted on March 11, 2021, ARPA will change the course of the pandemic and bring immediate and direct relief to families and workers affected by the COVID-19 crisis through no fault of their own.

The law also includes funding for state, local and tribal governments, as well as education and testing related to COVID-19, immunization support and research. State, local and tribal governments across America have come under unprecedented pressure in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis. As the need for services increased (eg setting up emergency medical facilities, vaccination sites), state and local revenues fell due to the economic fallout from the crisis.

At the peak of the fallout, public sector employment fell by about 1.4 million jobs, including layoffs of one million educators, compared to about 750,000 job losses during the Great Recession . A balanced budget is seen as the foundation of government tax practices. State, local and tribal governments face daunting challenges: making untenable choices between laying off frontline workers or not providing the services communities rely on.

We’re not out of the woods yet.
