Three firefighters were killed Monday and another was seriously injured after part of a vacant Baltimore townhouse collapsed, trapping them inside as they fought a blaze, authorities said.

The Baltimore Fire Department responded to a call just before 6 a.m. at a three-story home about two miles west of downtown Baltimore, Fire Department Chief Niles Ford said. of the City of Baltimore at a press conference Monday afternoon.

After firefighters became trapped, crews had to remove piles of debris to clear them, officials said. One was immediately pulled from the fire and taken to hospital, where he remained in critical condition on Monday afternoon. Two firefighters were later pulled from the blaze and taken to hospital, where they were pronounced dead, Chief Ford said. A third firefighter died at the scene.

“From this moment on, we will honor those who lost their lives today for their bravery, for their courage, for their love and compassion for this great city, and for the fire department,” he said. said Chief Ford.

Mayor Brandon Scott of Baltimore said Monday night that the hospitalized firefighter was in critical condition and “fighting for his life.”

“Baltimore has lost three of the bravest of us,” Mr. Scott said. “This is a heartbreaking tragedy for our city, for our fire department and, most importantly, for the families of our firefighters. There are no words – none – to describe the pain and the gravity of the losses we suffered today.

The three firefighters who died were Lt. Paul Butrim, who had worked for the department for 16 years; Kelsey Sadler, a 15-year veteran of the department; and Kenny Lacayo, who had worked for the department for seven years, city officials said.

Hospitalized firefighter John McMaster, who was on life support Monday night, has been with the service for six years, city officials said.

James Sadler, Mrs Sadler’s stepfather, described Mrs Sadler as a “charming woman” whom he loved as a daughter.

“When she hugged you, she hugged you like a bear,” he said in a phone interview Monday night, adding that she had been married to his son for about four years.

“I can’t believe it,” he said. “Words can’t even explain how much I will miss her.”

Dr Thomas Scalea, chief medical officer at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, said the two firefighters who were pronounced dead at hospital went into cardiac arrest at the scene and could not be revived .

In a statement on Monday, Governor Larry Hogan of Maryland ordered flags across the state to be lowered to half mast to honor firefighters.

“Every day, our firefighters and first responders answer the call and are ready to run into danger,” Hogan said. “It’s our worst nightmare.”

Chief Ford said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Although the townhouse is vacant, Mr Scott said the other buildings in the block are not.

“We could be talking about more lives lost if not for the heroism of these people here,” Mr Scott said. “That should be the focus today.”
