But most children’s advocates believe the guidelines are a thoughtful approach to reshaping the Internet for potentially vulnerable young people. “We are definitely fans,” James P. Steyer, Managing Director of Common sense media, said.

Why has it spread globally?

To comply with the UK code, Facebook, Google and other companies could have changed features only for children who live in that country. Corn practically and philosophically, that could have been a bad choice.

There is growing support among lawmakers and technical staff for different features and guarantees to protect children against sexual predators, inappropriate content, bullying and other risks of being online.

Internet companies know that more regulations like Britain’s are coming, so it may be prudent to act of their own accord. “I think they can see the writing on the wall,” Sonia Livingstone, a professor at the London School of Economics who studies children’s digital rights, told Wired This year.

What is Washington doing?

Members of Congress deliberate on potential updates to the US Comprehensive Online Child Protection Act, the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. The law of the 1990s forced the most popular online services in the United States to ban users under the age of 13. But we do know that many American children are online with or without their parents’ permission. The question now is what more could or should be done to make them safer online.

In one video from the Opinion section of the New York Times, my colleagues argued that Congress should copy the British regulations. A few American lawmakers basically came up with that. “Why not here?” Connecticut Democrat Senator Richard Blumenthal asked during Wednesday’s hearing, referring to the UK code.

UK regulations are indeed already there, but without the force of US law. Steyer said he was frustrated Congress had yet to pass new child safety laws, but believed they would come very soon. “2022 is going to be very important here for technology legislation and regulation,” he said.
