Welcome. Big plans for the weekend? I reflected on this question, a staple of workplace gossip, both an invitation to share something personal with a colleague and a challenge to quickly run through your mental agenda in search of something, of anything that could reach the level of a “plan,” no matter a “big one.”

I have noticed that people have started asking questions about “big plans” again, whether for the weekend or the holidays, and the question seems loaded with new and delicate ways. Do my plans seem too risky, given the latest variant news? Too careful? What do I reveal about my comfort / discomfort level with the timing of the pandemic when I respond?

Of course, the request is not always meant to be taken at face value; it’s chatter, low-stakes openness, telegraphing that we’re not just everyday drones, but multidimensional humans with lives outside of our jobs. But that’s another social byproduct of the pandemic: The seemingly casual exchanges feel newly loaded. It’s not necessarily a bad thing to think more about how we describe our lives. We might even periodically wonder about our big plans – for this weekend, for next year, for the future. How do our responses change from moment to moment?

I don’t mind telling you that my big plans this weekend are to watch the new season of “How to deal with John Wilson”, complete the captivating novel by Katie Kitamura “Privacy” (one of the book reviews 10 best books of 2021), discovering some of Eric Asimov’s articles favorite wines of 2021. (I’m curious about the “fresh, energetic, textured and eminently digestible” Australian Riesling called “Opa, watch out!” But it seems hard to find in the US)
