Recent letters calling for the status quo to be maintained for the overhaul of Northampton town center are regressive and short-sighted.

Even before the pandemic, our downtown was in constant decline, indicating that improvements have been needed for some time. Additionally, climate change is causing warmer days which will make the city center unbearable if conditions do not improve significantly.

The idea that additional traffic lanes will improve the flow of motor vehicles in the city center is wrong. We could develop six lanes for motor vehicles and that would not change anything. Cars should always stop and wait at crosswalks and intersections.

The illusion of extra capacity would force more people to drive at peak times, resulting in the same backups. Applying the design of rural roads to city streets has proven inefficient for urban transport and has undermined the vitality of the city centers they pass through.

Calling for the elimination of planned cycling infrastructure in favor of maintaining the perceived capacity of motor vehicles is ludicrous. Cars are privately owned and created noise and air pollution, and are inefficient in terms of the use of space and energy, often carrying only one individual. Acres of asphalt for traffic lanes and parking displace trees, greenery, and space for public and private activities; all the things that are necessary for a pleasant and prosperous city center.

Replacing as many cars and trucks as possible with quiet, clean, and efficient bikes (of all kinds) will benefit anyone who travels and new to the city center (even those who can’t or prefer not to ride a bike). It is the path to a better city, as has been clearly demonstrated in other cities across the country and around the world.

For a city proud of its progressivism, creativity and open-mindedness, one would expect Northampton to be among the leaders who are rapidly improving their transport infrastructure and urban environment, especially in the face of climate change. potentially devastating. We lack the status quo, we urgently need to move forward.
