The worst of a winter storm that brought record snowfall and low temperatures in parts of the western United States this week appear to be over, but travel delays, freezing temperatures and lighter snowfall are still expected in the coming days.

The National Weather Service in Reno, Nevada, said early Thursday that the accumulated snowfall was largely over, with some snow showers possible Thursday morning.

“The greatest risk however will be the freezing of moisture on the roads, which will lead to freezing travel conditions in the Sierra and western Nevada,” the Weather Service said, adding that although major highways have reopened, drivers should “be prepared for slow-moving conditions throughout the area for the morning commute.”

The weather service predicted a cold introduction to the New Year in Nevada, with “the coldest air in nearly five years” expected to arrive this weekend. Forecasters expected temperatures to drop to single digits for “much of western Nevada” and below zero in parts of the Sierra Nevada.

But little to no snow was expected, bringing relief to an area that had been battered since the weekend. The weather service called for a cloudy sky in the Greater Lake Tahoe area, with a slight risk of flurries Thursday evening and Friday morning and clear skies over the weekend.

It would be a relatively calm end to a historically snowy month. the Central Sierra Snow Lab at the University of California at Berkeley, recorded 210 inches of snowfall in December, the third snowiest month in the region’s history and its snowiest December.

The blizzards have wreaked havoc on travel this week, forcing the one-day closure of an 81-mile freeway in the Sierra Nevada and rendering several freeways and state roads in northern California impassable.

The sprawling winter storm system has spread across the west coast to Washington, where Seattle on Monday broke a record for its lowest temperature on that particular date. At Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, a minimum temperature of 17 degrees Fahrenheit broke a 53-year record on Monday.

Nearly 300 inbound and outbound flights at the airport were canceled Thursday morning, with dozens more delayed, according to FlightAware, continuing a week of cancellations and delays.
