Time is a flat circle, but we want to help you break it. To that end, we brought in two experts – one with a knowledge of the ins and outs of professional New York soccer teams, the other a country-focused soccer analyst – to answer a critical question as that weekly service to readers: Are the Jets and the Giants still good?

Devin Gordon, author of “So Many Ways to Lose: The Amazing True Story of the New York Mets, the Best Worst Team in Sport,” observed the teams from a local perspective.

Diante Lee, a NFL analyst at Pro Football Focus, offered a national perspective.

Zach Wilson had 23 of 38 passes for 226 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, but the Jets (3-9) were pissed off in the second half as Gardner Minshew led the Philadelphia Eagles (6-7) to 33 -18. to win.

In the 1993 meeting between these teams, Eagles quarterback Randall Cunningham broke his leg after the Jets took a 21-0 lead in the second quarter. He was replaced by Bubby Brister, a career replacement, who led Philadelphia to 2 points, 30-28. Then, as the Jets looked to seal the win late in the fourth quarter, Boomer Esiason threw a 94-yard pick-6 to freeze him for the Eagles.

Before Sunday, it was the Jets’ closest time to beat the Eagles. In their 61-year history, the Jets were 0-11 against Philadelphia, lending this otherwise trivial game something akin to stakes. Would the Jets extend their 0 streak forever against this not-so-distinguished franchise? Or would rookie quarterback Zach Wilson show Philadelphia City that no one beats the Jets 12 times in a row?

For at least half, Wilson looked set to make his mark in Jets history. He directed three straight touchdowns to open the game, including his first career touchdown connection – a 3-yard throw – with rookie wide receiver Elijah Moore. Those three scores, however, earned the Jets a sublime Jets-y 18 points, after two failed point-for-point attempts and a failed 2-point conversion.

At halftime, the Jets were trailing the Eagles by 3 thanks to their worst defense in the NFL, which allowed another Eagles replacement, Gardner Minshew, to score on all four Philadelphia records in the first half ( three touchdowns and a field goal put the Eagles in place, 24-18).

Jets coach Robert Saleh arrived from San Francisco with a reputation as a defensive assistant, but his first Jets defense is more than 30 points per game, three more than the NFL’s second worst defense, the Atlanta Falcons, ranked 31st. This time the unit cleared 33.

Wilson and Moore, the first Jets player to deserve a catch in fantasy football since wide receiver Brandon Marshall in 2015 during Fitzmagic Peak, can’t score sideways. In the decisive third quarter, the Eagles offense held the ball for almost 70 seconds.

The streak has reached a dozen.

Verdict: Zach Wilson + Elijah Moore + a trash Jets defense = fun shootouts all the way!

I am now a fan of the Jets for [checks watch] three weeks after I semi-retired my Eagles fandom, and today I would like to write a thank you note to Gang Green for their tireless work to maintain their identity.

Philadelphia is used to winning at MetLife against some unlucky organizations, and Sunday’s game got rather odd, as the Eagles took a 33-18 victory. What game involving either of these franchises doesn’t?

The Jets found the offense early, with such efficiency that Zach Wilson had finally solved the team’s problems with his aerial attack. Of course, after his third touchdown of the game, the Jets offense never entered the red zone again. At least offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur is figuring out his opening script.

There are several points of frustration about the Jets’ defense, with the inability to stop the run at or near the top of the list. Philadelphia dramatically improved their rushed offense over the past six weeks, but most of it involved using quarterback Jalen Hurts as a threat in the play option.

Hurts injured his ankle on Sunday and the Eagles still managed to gain 185 rushing yards – the surest indication of the Jets’ lack of talent up front. The holes in this defense don’t end with the first seven either. Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert probably hadn’t felt this out of hand since high school. He had 105 yards on six catches, with two receiving touchdowns, either slipping open the seams or flying over defensemen. Gardner Minshew likely won another NFL contract with that performance, and he can join me in thanking the Jets for their consistency.

Verdict: it’s as watchable as it will be this year!

The Giants (4-8) managed to convert just three field goals and the Miami Dolphins (6-7) won easily at home, 20-9, for their fifth straight victory.

After last week’s snoozy win over the Eagles – arguably the most boring of the season – the Giants outdid themselves with an even more mind-numbing game against the Dolphins on the road, losing 20-9.

The total of two offensive games since the sacking of offensive coordinator Jason Garrett: one touchdown and five field goals (but without starting quarterback Daniel Jones on Sunday). Substitute Mike Glennon took the start, which meant Giants fans had plenty of quiet time to think about all of the many existential questions facing this franchise.

With their squad amassing just 9 points against the Middle Dolphins, Giants general manager Dave Gettleman and handpicked head coach Joe Judge will likely only survive until the end of the season, so that’s two. existential answers. Anyone in those roles will immediately be faced with Existential Question # 3: whether to extend Daniel Jones’ contract or draft another quarterback in the spring – or both.

Existential Question # 4 (probably the most difficult of all): What about Saquon Barkley? He had just 9 total yards in the first half against Miami and finished with 55 rushing yards on 11 carries. He hasn’t scored a touchdown for two months. He hasn’t looked like Saquon for two years.

Verdict: Don’t forget to put “head coach” and “general manager” on your holiday wishlist!

The Dolphins and Giants fought an uphill battle over who would inspire the least confidence in the event of a win, before Miami pulled out and ended Sunday’s 20-9 puntfest.

Soccer matches are played on an infinitely microscopic level, with most of the 22 participants in any given game never touching the ball, but fighting crucial battles that determine whether or not it will advance. Much of the ballet-by-piece context is lost if only the evaluation of the final score.

Sunday’s score, however, paints a very clear picture of what happened in Miami. Mike Glennon, replacing Daniel Jones, averaged just 4.3 yards for his 44 attempted passes. Either way, his decision making always seemed more ambitious than the pass option-heavy approach of his Dolphins counterpart, Tua Tagovailoa. Between these two infractions, I think I have had my fill of slanted roads and screens for the rest of 2021.

The best news for the Giants was that Freddie Kitchens, Jason Garrett’s replacement as offensive coordinator, seemed determined to get tight end Evan Engram involved in the field. In each of the last two games, he’s been targeted at least five times and has averaged over 12 yards per reception, leading a team that has experienced instability as a receiver all year round.

Then the Giants hit the road to take on the Los Angeles Chargers, a sure playoff team who were as bad at stopping the run as the Giants were at directing the ball. If Jones returns, there may be some fleeting fun ahead.

Verdict: No Daniel Jones, bad luck.
