Tesla has told federal regulators it plans to recall more than 475,000 cars for two separate flaws that could affect safety.

A reminder covers 356,309 Model 3 sedans from the 2017 to 2020 model years. Tesla told the regulator, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, that the rear view camera wiring on these vehicles can be damaged when opening and closing the trunk. This could prevent the images from appearing on the dashboard screen while the car is backing up, thus increasing the risk of an accident.

the second reminder covers 119,009 Model S sedans from model years 2014 to 2021. These cars may have a misaligned latch on the front hood, which could allow the hood to open unexpectedly.

Tesla reported the issues to the security agency on December 21; the agency posted the recalls on its website on Wednesday.

The measures come as the security agency increases its oversight of You’re here after being criticized for his negligence in previous years.

In August, he opened a formal investigation into Tesla’s autopilot system, which can steer, brake and accelerate a car on its own with minimal driver intervention.

The agency is examining how Autopilot recognizes objects on the road, especially parked emergency vehicles with flashing lights. The investigation focuses on 11 cases in which Tesla cars running on autopilot collided with fire trucks or police cars that had stopped on highways. An accident left one dead.

In September, Tesla released a software update to improve Autopilot’s ability to recognize emergency vehicles, but did not immediately initiate a callback, which is the normal procedure when an automobile manufacturer corrects a safety defect. Facing pressure from the security agency, Tesla announced a recall in October.

The agency is also looking at more than two dozen other crashes since 2016 involving cars running on autopilot. Eight of these accidents resulted in a total of 10 fatalities.
