Serena Williams has announced her withdrawal from the Australian Open next month, extending her absence from the sport she has long led.

“I’m not where I need to be physically to compete,” Williams said in an announcement Wednesday upon exiting the Australian Open. the list of registered players for the 2022 tournament.

Williams, a seven-time Australian Open singles champion, is now 40 and hasn’t played on the WTA Tour since June 28, when she retired late in the first set of her first set. opening at Wimbledon with a right thigh injury.

The injury took a long time to heal and also kept Williams out of this year’s US Open. Williams did not specifically mention the hamstring injury in her statement Wednesday, saying only that she had decided to step down due to “the advice of my medical team.”

As Williams confirmed his absence, the Australian Open said Novak Djokovic, the No. 1 men’s singles player, has been registered for the event, which kicks off Jan. 17 in Melbourne.

The state government of Victoria requires all players to be fully vaccinated to compete, and Djokovic has refused in recent weeks to reveal his vaccination status or confirm whether he will play at the Australian Open, where he has won nine singles titles. But he is on the list of registrants, only a week after his father denounced the compulsory vaccination as “”these blackmail and conditionsAnd suggested that her son wouldn’t play.

Williams said she was “excited to come back and compete at my top level,” but it’s unclear when or if she will be able to achieve that goal.

Williams, ranked 41st, hasn’t won a Grand Slam singles title in nearly five years: she won the Australian Open in January 2017 when she was two months pregnant with her daughter, Olympia. She returned to the tour in 2018 after the birth of Olympia and remarkably reached the singles finals at Wimbledon and the US Open in 2018 and again in 2019.

But although she has won her only touring title since returning in January 2020 to Auckland, New Zealand, she has struggled to maintain her momentum. She showed flashes of strong form, returning after touring 2020’s pandemic five-month hiatus to reach the US Open semifinals, where she lost a tense three-set duel to Victoria Azarenka. At this year’s Australian Open in February, Williams arrived in Melbourne in excellent physical condition and was impressive in the opening laps but was defeated in straight sets by Naomi Osaka in the semi-finals.

The Australian Open has been the scene of some of Williams’ greatest successes. In 2003, she won her fourth consecutive Grand Slam singles title in Melbourne. In 2005, she saved three match points in the semifinals in a classic match against Maria Sharapova and beat Lindsay Davenport in the final. In 2007, she entered the seedless tournament and won the title. In 2017, she won pregnant without dropping a set.

But it’s now unclear whether she’ll return to the tournament where she won seven of her 23 Grand Slam singles titles: one short of Margaret Court’s record.
