Rachel Maddow isn't quitting her nightly MSNBC show

With the 9pm time on CNN newly vacant due to the cooking of Chris cuomo, the time of 11 p.m. on MSNBC opening with the departure of Brian williams, and with the 7 p.m. slot on Fox News vacated for about a year now, it seems natural to want to look at the major changes on the horizon in cable news. CNN Chief Media Correspondent Brian stelter did just that in his Bulletin from trusted sources Sunday evening – but also added another vacant post to the list.

“Early next year, MSNBC’s 9pm time will also need a new host, because Rachel Maddow takes a step back from day-to-day tasks, ”Stelter wrote.

Stelter is relying on its own report by making this statement. In August, he wrote that two sources told him Maddow would be moving his show to a more weekly format in early 2022. And the Daily Beast had similar reports, noting that “Maddow’s nighttime show will cease to air in its current form sometime in the spring of 2022”. But what does this mean exactly?

Color me skeptical that MSNBC will soon have a Maddow-sized hole at 9 p.m.

The contract extension Maddow signed over the summer would earn him $ 30 million a year until the 2024 election. According to these reports, the terms of the deal require Maddow to “end” its nighttime show this spring and move to a weekly show that will produce about 30 episodes per year.

If this is true, it is quite simply – from a network point of view – one of the worst deals in television history. Yes, CNN wanted to hire her, and yes, she had top agents, but it’s still impossible to believe that NBC would have given so much for so little.

A weekly show is not expected to impact MSNBC as Maddow’s current nightly program. The idea that the network would pay him nine figures for an occasional show and one or two Peacock documentaries seems to be of enormous significance.

You would think that if MSNBC made sense, the deal was a stopgap. Everything to keep The Rachel Maddow Show on the air, because the network currently has nothing comparable to replace it.

And just like they asked Maddow to give them a few extra months until next spring, I bet MSNBC’s current plan is to try and take away a few months at a time from him, until 2024 – if they have. what they want.

Now, I believe Rachel Maddow believes she will end her show as it is now in the next few months. Reports from last year made it clear that doing a nighttime show had exhausted her and that she insisted on stepping back to spend more time with her family. I wouldn’t even dismiss the possibility that there was contract language spelling out Maddow’s reduction in duties.

But before the clock Actually midnight strikes, I bet the network will rely on Maddow to stay on top of the 9pm show one way or another. A scenario I can easily imagine calls for the network, as a first step, to ask Maddow to keep the fort a few more months to prepare a successor. Then, perhaps after a summer hiatus to recharge its batteries (which the Network might see as a long-term audition for a potential replacement), the Network would rely on Maddow to hang on halfway through. Maddow is loyal to the progressive cause and arguably doesn’t want Republicans to win a majority in Congress. Beyond any sense of duty she might feel to the network, there’s a good chance she wants to have as much of an impact as possible on the 2022 election – which means staying on the air.

Having said that, do I expect her to continue recording a show every night 48 weeks a year? No, I don’t. But what if she records multiple shows in one day? What if she shared the workload with a new host, while she remains “executive producer” of a show that bears her name?

In August, as rumors swirled about the breakdown of contract talks between MSNBC and their star, this reporter published a column titled: You don’t REALLY believe Rachel Maddow is considering quitting MSNBC, do you? It came like Stelter and others ran out of breath with rumors that Maddow was about to walk.

As I pointed out in this column, a separation of paths never really made sense for both sides. Maddow had all kinds of influences with MSNBC that she couldn’t have used with any other outlet or independent business. And the president of MSNBC Rashida jones, who is still fairly new to her role as head of the network, could ill afford to lose her top star. There was a strong incentive on both sides to strike a deal, and they did.

Nothing has changed on the MSNBC side. They really need The Rachel Maddow Show Continue. We’re assuming here that they’ll do whatever it takes to keep Maddow in the big chair every night at 9 p.m. This could mean a reduction in the schedule. It could mean a long summer vacation. This could mean yet another pay rise.

Even if it is reported as obvious, the end of the evening Rachel Maddow Show is something I’m going to have to see before I believe it.
