None of the crew of the Navy combatant Milwaukee who was infected with the coronavirus needed hospitalization, the Guantánamo Bay base hospital said on Sunday, two days after the Navy revealed an outbreak among fully vaccinated sailors aboard the ship.

The Milwaukee left her home port in Jacksonville, Fla. On Dec. 14 with a crew of 105 Sailors, including a Navy helicopter combat crew and a Coast Guard law enforcement unit in as part of US Southern Command’s efforts to combat drug trafficking in the Caribbean. He reached Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, on Monday for a fueling and refueling stop and extended his stay there due to the outbreak.

“Our medical and public health teams are in close contact with the medical staff on board the ship,” Dawn Grimes, the hospital spokesperson, said on Sunday. At the ship’s request, she added, the hospital was providing medical staff on board with booster doses of the Covid-19 vaccine “to be administered to those” who want an additional injection.

None of the Milwaukee’s crew were allowed to leave the ship and the adjacent jetty after docking at the base, Cmdr. Kate Meadows said on Saturday, sparing the 6,000 residents in Guantanamo Bay the risk of being exposed. The ship hosted its own outdoor, social-distancing Christmas service on the pier, rather than attending base chapel services, and the chefs on board cooked a festive meal instead of joining the Guantanamo staff for their meals.

Troops on active service in the Army and Navy were made redundant this month for their refusal to be vaccinated after President Biden compulsory vaccination for the armed forces in August. But there was only a small group of refractories last week, with the Navy reporting that over 98 percent of its limbs had been vaccinated.

Only 85 percent of base residents were fully immunized on Sunday, Ms. Grimes said.

The outbreak aboard the Milwaukee is the first major Covid-related health crisis aboard a US ship sailing for Southern Command since April 2020, when the Navy returned the USS Kidd from similar ban operations from the drugs in San Diego with dozens of infected sailors on board. This episode occurred before the development of a vaccine.

In March 2020, one of the military’s first encounters with the virus occurred aboard the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt. The ship docked in Guam, South Pacific, and ran aground there for months afterwards dozens of sailors were infected and one died. The ship’s captain at the time sent a letter to Navy officials pleading for help with the outbreak and criticizing the Navy’s failure to provide the appropriate resources. It was later removed from order of the ship.
