The Broadway production of “Hamilton” has canceled all performances until after Christmas as a peak in coronavirus cases hits the performing arts across North America as well as London.

Cancellations, prompted by positive coronavirus tests among cast or crew members, come at the worst possible time for many productions, as the holiday season is typically the most lucrative time of year.

On Saturday and Sunday, about a third of Broadway shows canceled their performances. And there have been several cancellations caused by Covid Off Broadway, as well as Chicago, Houston, Denver, Los Angeles, and other cities.

“Hamilton,” a sold-out juggernaut that had been the highest-grossing show on Broadway – cited groundbreaking cases of Covid-19 in his company as the reason for the cancellation. The show has been dark since December 15 – the morning went as planned that day, but the evening performance has been dropped – and the first next possible performance is December 27.

The show is the second major Broadway musical to be canceled all this week, after “MJ”, a new musical about Michael Jackson, still premiering, which on December 17 canceled all performances until December 27, citing “several positive Covid tests in the company.”

Cancellations are now rampant, on Broadway and beyond. In most cases, according to producers, positive coronavirus tests are associated with mild or asymptomatic cases, but performances are called off because there are not enough liners or replacement workers to replace those who must be missing. the show. In recent days, all of the Broadway cancellations have been for mass-market productions, for reasons that are not entirely clear. Smaller productions – including most plays – continued to run.

The past few days have been filled with grim news for those hoping the performing arts have finally passed the devastating pandemic shutdown.

The timing was especially dire for the Rockettes, who last week canceled all remaining performances of their annual Christmas show, a must-see on vacation for many tourists. Other holiday shows were also affected: a production of “A Christmas Carol” at the Center Theater Group in Los Angeles canceled all performances until after Christmas, while in Houston several performances of the Christmas production of The Alley Theater were also canceled.

Concerns about the Omicron variant are also starting to weigh on future productions: the first North American production of Tom Stoppard’s acclaimed new play, “Leopoldstadt,” has been canceled entirely; he was scheduled to start a seven-week race in Toronto on January 22. And in Ottawa, “Hamilton” postponed a scheduled six-month race.

The pandemic is hitting Broadway touring shows again: “The Lion King” has canceled its Sunday night performance in Denver. “Pretty Woman” has canceled its last performances in Chicago.

The dance world has also been affected: Alvin Ailey has canceled performances at the New York City Center, while Mark Morris performances canceled this weekend at Zellerbach Hall at the University of California at Berkeley.
