Health officials in Ghana and Nigeria said on Wednesday they had identified the Omicron variant in travelers who arrived in their countries in November from other African countries.

Nigeria has detected the variant in three travelers who arrived from South Africa last week, Dr Ifedayo Adetifa, managing director of the Nigeria Center for Disease Control, said in a press release Wednesday.

Ghana also announced on Wednesday that it had detected the Omicron variant in arriving airline passengers. in Accra, the capital, on November 21. These passengers had arrived from Nigeria and South Africa, according to Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, director general of the Ghana Health Service.

At least 23 countries around the world have reported cases of Omicron, and that number is likely to increase as more samples are tested, the World Health Organization said at a press conference on Wednesday. .

The variant was first detected in Botswana and South Africa.

Ghana and Nigeria are the third and fourth countries in mainland Africa to report cases.

Scientists say it may take weeks before we know more about the transmissibility of the variant, the severity of the disease it causes, and the protection that current vaccines offer against it.

Yet governments have reacted with concern and markets have fallen in recent days, with the WHO rating the global risk of the variant as “very high.”

Nigerian health officials on Wednesday urged state governments to make testing easily accessible, vaccinate many more people, and ensure the public obeyed public health measures, including masking and social distancing. Nigeria has so far reported 214,113 positive cases and 2,976 deaths from the coronavirus.

With over 200 million inhabitants, Nigeria has administered just over 9.8 million doses of the vaccine, according to the World Health Organization. As of Wednesday, federal government employees were to either be vaccinated or present a negative Covid-19 certificate. Travelers entering the country are expected to arrive with a negative Covid test and take two more tests the second and seventh day after arrival.

The Nigeria Center for Disease Control said earlier on Wednesday that it also detected the Omicron variant in an October sample, but then withdrew that announcement. The previous sample was that of the Delta variant, according to a message shared on WhatsApp by center spokesperson Emeka Oguanuo.
