As New York’s arts and culture sector seeks to recover from the economic devastation caused by the pandemic, the The Ministry of Cultural Affairs announced Thursday that it would award $ 51.4 million in grants to over 1,000 non-profit arts organizations.

The grants, for fiscal year 2022, represent the largest allocation ever to what is known as the Cultural Development Fund. Some grants will greatly increase funding for organizations in need of a financial boost; other grants will provide more targeted support for disability arts, access to languages, arts education and more.

Officials also said part of the money – around $ 5.1 million – was being sent to more than 650 groups working in underserved communities that have been hit hard by the pandemic.

“This enhanced funding will encourage artists, creators and producers across town to continue to express their ideas and stories on their own terms,” said Vicki Been, Deputy Mayor for Housing and Economic Development, in a statement. communicated.

A survey into the effects of the coronavirus commissioned by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs in spring 2020 found that overall, around one in ten arts organizations believed they would not survive the pandemic. Small organizations in particular were among the hardest hit, according to the survey.

Some of the grants, under $ 10,000, went to small theater companies, choirs and museums. And to further help ensure that small groups and even individual artists receive a share of the funding, nearly $ 3 million will be donated to five local arts councils serving each arrondissement. These tips, in turn, will distribute money to local voters, city officials said.

But large organizations will also benefit. Some of the city’s most recognized arts institutions, such as the Metropolitan Opera, New York Philharmonic, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and 92nd Street Y, are among the organizations that will receive some of the largest grants, exceeding $ 100,000. each.

The grants – $ 45.5 million in mayor’s funds and $ 5.9 million in items from city council members – are part of what officials said is an annual budget of around $ 230 million for the Ministry of Cultural Affairs.

“Culture is essential to healthy and vibrant neighborhoods, and there is no recovery for New York City without our cultural community,” said Gonzalo Casals, the city’s cultural affairs commissioner.
