Astrophysicist Neil de Grasse Tyson was rightly mocked on Twitter Friday and Saturday after the cynic Grinch attempted to use science to explain why Santa’s reindeer would surely perish while delivering gifts.

In a tweet that can only be called unnecessary, the former host by fox Cosmos: a space-time odyssey and PBS ‘ Nova Science Now nailed the role of Scrooge. He explained why a fictional cultural icon like Kris Kringle was never able to reach six continents in a single night using flying reindeer without all of them being vaporized during transport.

“For Santa Claus to deliver gifts to all the Christians in the world overnight, you need hypersonic speeds in Earth’s lower atmosphere, vaporizing his reindeer and sleigh,” Tyson explained on Twitter. “Just saying.”

The basis for Tyson’s inconsequential sighting was totally flawed, and people from countless walks of life who had the bad luck to meet her followed suit.

North American Aerospace Defense Command spent six decades pretending to follow in Santa’s movements to the delight of children and adults alike. So one would have thought that a pugnacious man like Tyson could have tidied up its suffocating anti-fun shtick for the holidays.

Even the Germans briefly laid down their arms for Christmas in 1914.

But Tyson Friday was unwilling or unable to go on his own enough. The man whose observations are so often thought-provoking could not afford the blind masses a paltry 24 hours to enjoy both the religious and secular aspects of Christmas without trying to spoil all the fun.
