Washington’s prisons have long been a source of local shame and outrage. The US Marshals Service recently reported finding sewage and water leaks at the prison, as well as cases of prison officers withholding food and water as punishment. But the most extreme conditions were not in the section of the prison where the January 6 defendants are being held.

Karl A. Racine, Attorney General of Washington, said last month that the squalid conditions in the prison – where most inmates are black – had “received little attention until they were raised by mostly white defendants accused of carrying out the January 6 insurgency “.

In court records and accounts shared by supporters, however, the defendants incarcerated on January 6 used these conditions to heighten their image of themselves as oppressed but steadfast prisoners of war. Every night at 9 p.m., they salute an American flag and sing “The Star-Spangled Banner”.

But there were cracks in this solidarity.

Steven A. Metcalf, a lawyer who represents two of the inmates – Edward Lang, a self-proclaimed social media influencer from Newburgh, NY, and Dominic Pezzola, a member of the far-right Proud Boys from Rochester, NY – said he believed the government deliberately kept the accused rioters together. “To see who is a leader, who is a follower and who could cooperate,” he said.

But Mr Metcalf said an unhealthy environment had developed with inmates in the “Patriots’ wing” increasingly suspicious of who among them might be a government informant. He said that when a defendant mentioned another in a court file, a fight broke out.

Questions have also arisen about creating a sedition greenhouse by keeping together like-minded inmates who are accused of attacking the seat of government.

In October, an attorney for Thomas Sibick – a Buffalo, NY man accused of stealing an officer’s badge and radio – told a federal judge his client was so desperate to escape the environment “almost. sectarian ”of the January 6 unit that he had opted for isolation. The judge handed Mr Sibick over to her parents’ care, in part because she feared that the unit’s “toxic environment” could lead to further radicalization.
