It's Ben Domenech against Ben Domenech on vaccine passports

During the panel segment on Tuesday Special report, Fox News contributor Ben domenech reacted to the president at Joe Biden speech on the Covid-19 pandemic earlier today. His comments would be trite for a Fox News expert were it not for the fact that he accused Biden of doing more or less what he did in a column for The Federalist in 2015: denounce the hesitant about vaccines.

In fact, Domenech went even further than Biden.

In his Remarks, Biden made 10 mentions of “unvaccinated” people. He correctly noted for the umpteenth millionth time that the unvaccinated are at a much greater risk of being hospitalized or dying from Covid-19. In addition, he noted, there are real fears that a winter wave could overwhelm hospitals.

Regarding the president’s speech, Domenech said:

I think the significant failure that I think has happened once again with these remarks is to treat those who are not vaccinated – for whatever reason – as if they are part of an outside group, that they are the Others, whom they should to blame for the situation we find ourselves in today, even though we see the news every day from one person after another who is fully vaccinated – even those who have reminders – who are nonetheless diagnosed as genuinely positive for this new, widespread variant virus, which I think we can be very grateful for, as it doesn’t seem as deadly as the others.

These are all things that I think the president has the opportunity to unite the country on. At this point he hasn’t been able to do that and I think it would really take a big change of direction in the New Year for him to accomplish this feat.

Domenech’s remarks miss the crux of the matter that while it is true that vaccinated people experience breakthrough cases, they are much less likely to require hospitalization or die from the virus.

Anyway, before Domenech was against singling out the unvaccinated, he was very for singling out the unvaccinated, or at least, those who refuse to vaccinate their children. (They are often the same.) Writing in The Federalist in 2015, Domenech called vaccine skeptics within the conservative movement who “claimed there was some kind of legitimate debate about US vaccination policies.”

Here’s Domenech, targeting parents who refuse to immunize their children:

If you choose not to vaccinate, private and public institutions should be able to discriminate on this basis. Disneyland should be able to require proof of vaccination as a condition of entry, as should public schools. You shouldn’t have to immunize your child, but neither should the rest of us have to do the way you did.

It was Domenech six years ago – without pandemic or other major epidemic – suggesting that public schools and private companies be allowed to discriminate against parents and children who have not been vaccinated against measles, mumps and rubella.

That’s not all. Domenech suggested that if the decline in MMR vaccination rates continues, the federal government should inflict material pain on families with unvaccinated children:

If the decline in MMR vaccination continues, the federal government may be able to take action to make access to the child tax credit conditional on vaccination. If we want to have redistributive social engineering in the tax code, it might as well be for children who are not disease carriers around Disneyland.

To be clear, Covid-19 is not measles, mumps or rubella, which these days are hardly a threat as the vast majority of the public has been vaccinated against these diseases. The same cannot be said of Covid-19, which kills more than 1,000 Americans every day – of which around 98% to 99% are not vaccinated.

So yes, the president distinguishes the unvaccinated, but the virus too. And he’s a lot nastier than Joe Biden.
