Shaynna Sims was haunted that her husband had been having an affair. So when her lover passed away in 2015, Ms. Sims went on a visit to the funeral home in Tulsa, Oklahoma. There, she mutilated the body of the woman, who, according to prosecutors, later had both “roughly cut” breasts. She also took graphic photos, including one with her wedding ring “prominently”. Ms Sims was sentenced to 16 years in prison in 2017, but last month she was released.

In that case, Judge Neil Gorsuch, joined by liberals on the court, ruled that Congress had never formally dissolved the Nation Creek Historic Reserve. The same logic was extended to five other tribes. As a result, state power to prosecute crimes involving Native American perpetrators and victims has vanished in nearly half of Oklahoma.
