Fieldston is zoned for PS 81, Robert J. Christen School, which offers Kindergarten to Grade 5 just north of the neighborhood. Enrollment is around 730. In 2018-19, 68% of students met state English exam standards, compared to 48% citywide. In math, 68% met standards, compared to 50% statewide.
For middle and high school, the zoned option is Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy, which serves sixth through 12th grade students on West 237th Street to the south. In high school, the student body in 2020 was 54% Hispanic, 26% white, 10% black, 8% Asian, and 1% Native American, according to the New York City Department of Education. The 2019 SAT reasoning test scores were 528 in reading and writing and 515 in math, compared to 491 and 496 citywide.
About 800 students attend the college part. In 2018-19 state exams, 54% of students met standards in English, compared to 47% citywide, while 55% met standards in math, compared to 41%.
Of the private options, the most prominent is probably Horace Mann on West 246th Street. In 1887, when it opened in Greenwich Village, tuition was $ 150 per year; today, it’s about $ 57,000, and 15 percent of students receive financial aid, according to the school. Nearby is the Bronx campus of the Ethical Culture Fieldston School, which offers Kindergarten to Grade 12 for about $ 58,000 a year, its website says, with 22% of students receiving financial aid. And one of Riverdale Country School’s two Bronx campuses is also in the neighborhood, enrolling students in grades 6 through 12. Tuition is $ 51,000, depending on the school, of which 20% are assisted.
