Chris Wallace, whose directing two presidential debates and insightful interviews with world leaders made him the leading presenter in Fox News reporting ranks, announced on Sunday that he had decided to quit the Rupert Murdoch-owned network after 18 year.

It will become the anchor for CNN +, CNN’s new streaming service slated to debut next year.

His exit from Fox News surprised the television news industry and will rob the network of a prominent figure who has been the face of its influential Sunday show, “Fox News Sunday,” and the network’s first presenter to receive a Nominated for an Emmy Award for his work.

“This is the last time, and I say it with real sadness, we’ll meet like this,” Wallace told viewers at the end of his Sunday show.

“I want to try something new, go beyond politics to whatever interests me; I am ready for a new adventure, ”said Mr. Wallace. “And I hope you will check it out. And so for the last time, dear friends, that’s all for today. Have a good week. And I hope you keep watching Fox News on Sunday.

Mr Wallace covered Reagan’s White House as an NBC News correspondent (and briefly hosted “Meet the Press”) before Roger Ailes, Fox News co-founder, hired him in 2003 to fill the post of leading political animator of the Murdoch network. the news.

A fair interrogator of Democrats and Republicans, Wallace has at times proved an aberration to Fox News, especially in recent years when the network’s conservative opinion leaders have closed ranks behind former President Donald J. Trump. Mr Wallace’s criticisms of Mr Trump earned him criticism from some viewers and the president’s own Twitter account, but he also angered Liberals who wanted him to denounce his fellow supporters.

In his on-air remarks on Sunday, Wallace said that “the bosses here at Fox have promised me that they will never interfere with a guest I booked or a question I asked, and they kept that promise. I have been free to report to the best of my ability, to cover stories that I think are important, to hold the leaders of our country to account. It was a great ride.

The presenter’s contract had expired at the end of this year, and the network had wanted to keep it, according to a person familiar with the internal deliberations. “Fox News Sunday” will be temporarily hosted by a rotating network of news presenters, including Bret Baier, Martha MacCallum, John Roberts, Neil Cavuto and others.

CNN said Mr. Wallace’s new program would air on weekdays and “feature interviews with journalists from politics, business, sports and culture.”

In a statement circulated by CNN, Wallace said, “I look forward to the new freedom and flexibility that streaming offers by interviewing major figures in the news landscape – and finding new ways to tell the story. stories.”

As for Mr. Wallace’s departure, Fox News said in a statement, “We are extremely proud of our journalism and the exceptional team of which Chris Wallace has been a part for 18 years. The legacy of ‘Fox News Sunday’ will continue with our star reporters, many of whom will change roles until a permanent host is appointed.
