LONDON – Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Wednesday there would be an “effective diplomatic boycott” of the Beijing 2022 Olympics by Britain, which joined the United States and others on Wednesday in a decision to withdraw its senior officials for participation in the Winter game.

The boycott means athletes will be allowed to compete, but provides a way for Britain to publicly condemn China for its human rights violations. Australia and Lithuania have also joins the United States in its diplomatic boycott, and some members of the British Parliament had urged their countries to follow suit.

When asked in a question-and-answer session in Parliament whether Britain plans to join the official diplomatic boycott of the games, the PM initially stopped by saying ‘we do not support sports boycotts, “but then confirmed that there was no plan. for ministers to attend the Olympics.

Lawmakers pushed Mr Johnson on the issue and he eventually admitted the measures amounted to a boycott, showing his reluctance to formally snub China in the same way the United States does.

“There will indeed be a diplomatic boycott of the Winter Olympics in Beijing, no ministers are expected,” Johnson said. He added: “I don’t think sports boycotts are reasonable.”

Pressure has been exerted within the international community to force China to respond to a host of issues, including the Uyghur abuse and other Muslims from Xinjiang and crackdown on pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong, a former British colony.

Last month when the tennis star Peng shuai disappeared from public life after accusing a senior Communist Party official of sexual assault, calls for accountability have grown.
