At first pass, it seems like a serious overreaction on Samantha’s part. She’s been crossing an ocean and not responding to text messages just because her pride has been bruised? May be. Or maybe she was just fed up with the third wheel with her boring married friends and needed to move on, and overseas work is just a pretext. We’ll never know.

What we do know, however, is that in some ways the story mirrors reality. Much of this has been reported the relationships between the four main actors of the series are rumors and speculation. But we do know that there was friction between Cattrall and her cast mates and that Cattrall, like Samantha, pulled out.

Whatever the reasons for Samantha’s departure, it’s relevant. Over the decades, some friendships fade, and this plot point is a reminder that, like romantic relationships, friendships are sometimes not happy forever.

That being dismissed, the episode moves forward at a rapid pace, leaving little room for subtlety or nuance when it comes to locating the characters in this new stage of life. Everyone is older. (In case the time hasn’t been obvious, you’ll be aware of it by the many self-deprecating “old” jokes woven into the dialogue.) Women have gray hair, in varying degrees and shades of dye. They are not quite comfortable with podcasts. They struggle with pronouns. They weren’t what they once were, and they don’t try to be. Kind of. (As Charlotte, still a full brunette, argues, “Ruth Bader Ginsburg dyed her hair.”)

Carrie is still in the media game, but she turned her success from Print Columns and Books into a stable podcast gig and healthy Instagram following. It’s still a little uncomfortable for her, especially when her younger boss, Che Diaz (Sara Ramirez), “queer, non-binary, Mexican-Irish diva,” tells her she needs to be more explicit on the show. .

Charlotte is mostly still Charlotte, living a beautiful life in a palace on Park Avenue with her beloved husband and daughters. While her elder, Lily (Cathy Ang), who amazes the crowd during her piano recital with a virtuoso performance, appears to resemble her mother in the pursuit of perfection, her youngest daughter, Rose (Alexa Swinton), is a punk skateboarder who won’t wear the Oscar de la Renta floral number her mother bought her without an ironic t-shirt over it.
