Like William Faulkner, another writer to whom she was often compared, Ms. Blais believed that collective human experiences, including evils like white supremacy and world war, were the result of inner personal conflicts, and that it was duty of the writer to explore them. .

“In writing you are compelled to probe the wounds of mankind,” she told The Globe and Mail in 1985. “It’s no fun.”

Marie-Claire Blais was born on October 5, 1939 in Quebec. His family was poor; her mother, Véronique (Nolin) Blais, had quit her teaching job to raise Marie-Claire and her four siblings, and her father, Fernando, was a refrigeration technician.

She is survived by her four brothers and sisters, Michel, Robert, Thérèse and Hélène.

Ms. Blais attended Roman Catholic schools, but quit at age 15 when her parents ran out of money. She rents her own apartment, works in a biscuit factory and a clothing store, and takes evening writing classes at Laval University in Quebec City.

She drew the attention of Jeanne Lapointe, English teacher, and of the Reverend Georges-Henri Lévesque, priest and vice-president of the Canada Council for the Arts, who helped her obtain scholarships allowing her to write “La Belle Beast. “

Some 50 books followed over the next six decades, including 29 novels, nine plays and three volumes of poetry. She has won virtually every award available to Canadian writers, including four Governor General’s Academic Medals, one of the country’s highest literary honors.

She has also received accolades from her fellow Canadian writers. Robertson Davies, one of the country’s greatest novelists of the 20th century, called her a “writer with tremendous capacity for imaginative creation” in a 1966 review of “A Season in the Life of Emmanuel” – well that he also criticized his work for being moody, saying he wished “Miss Blais had a touch of humor in her makeup, so that she could distinguish a gothic ghost from a Halloween pumpkin.”
