Two recent letters inspired me to write this (a little more) serious letter on the ascendancy of cancellation culture.

I am in favor of removing the megaphone from those who express racist / sexist / homophobic / etc. views of a public forum. But to expect anyone who doesn’t agree with you to be fired / resigned / or canceled seems to be abbreviated (sic) too far, in my opinion.

Ideological purity is the slower of progress, or as they say at home: “Perfection is the enemy of good.” I realize that what I just wrote has lost three-quarters of the people reading this and I want to say that I appreciate those of you who want a more nuanced perspective and who are still reading. But I digress.

First, the letter from a person who was mad about a column stating that the COVID vaccine is altering your DNA. Completely false and yet still printed by the Gazette. The person threatened to cancel his subscription if the newspaper published another “anti-vaccine” notice. Please don’t. The newspaper is an important institution. There would be no local government coverage or issues without it. If enough people cancel their subscriptions, the newspaper will fold and we will have nothing.

Is it better than having paper that sometimes prints things you don’t like? And how would you even know that things are going on that you don’t like if you haven’t read them in the newspaper first?

This trend in national politics can also be seen in the Democratic anger against Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema. Many Democrats want to kick them out of the party for delaying the president’s agenda. I am angry with them too. But would it be better if we kick them out and they become Republicans? If the Conservatives controlled the Senate, Joe Biden would be sitting alone in the White House because Republicans would not have approved any member of his cabinet and Build Back Better would have no chance of snowballing in our global warming environment.

Another letter called on Northampton’s arts advisers to resign due to the biannual arts breakaway. People make mistakes. They are placed in decision-making positions where it is impossible to please everyone, but that should not require their banishment. Most people learn from their mistakes and do better the next time around. But in today’s hyper-polarized political climate, it’s “one hit and you’re out.” And the lesson is, it’s better to do nothing than take action that might upset someone / everyone.

Besides, if the whole arts council is forced to resign (is it a resignation if it is forced?) As were the former members? Especially when those who are most emotionally triggered tend to shoot first and ask questions later. Not to mention their forming the traditional liberal circular firing squad that everyone gets it in.

But I am perhaps stretching this metaphor too much. Of course, it’s easier and safer to sit on the sidelines and criticize those who show good citizenship for doing things differently than you would if you had offered to volunteer, which you didn’t. have not done. So please allow a volunteer a little slack the next time they make decisions differently from you. Express your opinions, but don’t expect or insist that it is your path or the highway.

The truth is, getting rid of all those who disagree with them is the one thing the Loony-Left and the Ridiculous-Right agree on. But just because both parties are doing it doesn’t mean that it works well. After all, if you can get a bunch of angry people together to get rid of them, couldn’t they someday form an angry bunch to get rid of you? I’m just saying …
