As the mountaineering genre continues its ascent towards the general public, a thesis awaits a graduate student on male climbers and their mothers, wives or partners. Addressed in the Oscar winner “Free Solo” and summer “The mountaineer“these connections come to the fore in” 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible “, about Nepalese mountaineer Nirmal Purja, known as Nimsdai, and his attempt to reach the world’s 14 highest peaks in seven months (The previous record was seven years.) As his wife, Suchi Purja, charmingly attempts to explain her husband’s acceptance of risk to civilians, it is his ailing mother who learns more loving lessons about the motivation of his son but also on the mortality with which we are all confronted.

As a young man, Purja enlisted in his country’s legendary armed forces, the Gurkhas, and later joined the United Kingdom’s Special Forces. He grabbed the climbing company, which he called “Project Possible,” as a way to highlight the contributions of Nepalese mountaineers, who are more than Sherpas to Western expeditions. From the start, the other four climbers in the project – Mingma David Sherpa, Geljen Sherpa, Lakpa Dendi Sherpa and Gesman Tamang – are presented as essential characters. They are as devoted as he is to Purja’s seemingly insane mission.

Much of the escalation footage in the documentary was taken by Purja and his team. Director Torquil Jones uses these footage, along with new interviews (Alpine legend Reinhold Messner is beautifully existential) and vivid animation to create a documentary exploring themes of generosity, danger, motivation, and national character.

By expanding its openness – from climbs to tours of Purja’s childhood home as well as brief dives into Nepal’s history – “14 Peaks” expands a genre often focused on the exploits of individuals to celebrate lessons in de. vast dreams and community ties.
