Trump mentioned far fewer times on Fox News

There was a time, not so long ago, that Fox News won the label of “State television”Criticism for the way he covered, and possibly even promoted, the former president Donald trump.

But a curious trend followed his move from the White House to Mar-a-Lago, where he launches missives by e-mail instead of posts on the social media platforms from which he is banned: Fox News covers Trump considerably less than its cable news competitors.

And given the solid finish of the Virginia gubernatorial candidate Glenn youngkin – which has thrived despite largely avoiding Trump’s backing – this could be a worrying trend for the former president’s self-perception of his influence over the Republican Party.

Search for on-air mentions of “Trump” in the database of TV transcripts TVEyes since October 1 really tells the story. Trump was mentioned on Fox News 1,761 times as of 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. By comparison, Trump was mentioned 2,275 times on CNN and 3,088 on MSNBC.

To be clear, this does not distinguish between mentions of the 45th President, a member of the Trump family, or the Trump Organization itself.

In some ways, this observation is rather predictable. Fox News is a largely conservative network and has looked into the new Democratic administration, as well as political issues like vaccination warrants, Critical Race Theory, and of course, “parents’ rights»And their role in their public school program for children.

Fox News has also largely ignored the role Trump and his political allies played in the preparations for January 6, as well as the ongoing House Select Committee investigation into the riot. This is not a politically timely story for conservative media broadcasts, which is why it is largely ignored.

Ultimately, critical coverage of the wacky liberals and the president Joe biden are juicier scoring targets for Fox News.

On the other side of the set-top box, CNN and MSNBC continued to cover Trump and his role in the Republican Party. The programmers of these two networks still see Trump as a news story, and with good reason. He is the leading GOP candidate in the 2024 election, assuming he’s still running, and his grip on the Republican Party is still strong.

During a appearance on NewsNation Equilibrium with Leland vittertI noted the disparate media coverage of the Virginia governor’s race. Democratic candidate Terry McAullife tried in vain to make Youngkin look like a disciple of MAGA, and many in the media have amplified this account either out of genuine interest, bias, or just plain laziness. Fox News, however, got all-in on what I called “fear of an awakened planet, which judging by the two TV ratings and the latest polls, seems to win the day.

So why is it worth noting? Because preconceived ideas had long noted that a powerful partnership between Trump, MAGA and Fox News would prevail. And as we can see from the data expressed above, the Conservatives may no longer need Trump’s involvement to attract viewers or win the election.

There is one person who is probably most interested in this development above: the House Minority Leader Mitch mcconnell. I suspect he will use this kind of observation to confirm his instinct that Trump’s influence will wane, in the hope that this particular battle in the GOP Civil War, to the extent that it is a thing real, can be won by the establishment.

As for CNN and MSNBC? Trump is still a draw for them, as evidenced by their relentless coverage of his antics. But their ratings are dropping despite Trump’s coverage, which should prompt broader thinking.

But it’s clear that Trump is no longer rating Fox the way he used to. Viewers want to binge on stories about CRT and the liberals who eat it. As for a conservative hero, even among Fox News viewers, Ron DeSantis might be a more exciting proposition than tired old Trump.
