For more than five long uninterrupted minutes in August, Les Snead, general manager of the Los Angeles Rams, sat on a perch near the NFL team’s outdoor weight room and explained his philosophy on the constitution of a list.

He had just watched a training camp practice that featured Matthew Stafford, the Rams’ new quarterback, who Snead had traded for earlier in the offseason, and poked fun at his thought process.

“It’s a good thing it’s a deal with a newspaper,” Snead said in an interview, “because you can’t explain all of this quickly on TV.”

The Rams draft methodology needs to be untangled to understand from the outside, especially after the Rams traded second and third round picks to the Denver Broncos this week for Von Miller, one of the top outside linebackers in the world. the league. The team’s trades have left the Rams unselected in the first round until 2024 and only four picks in the next draft, the first of which is in the third round.

“You have to be aware of the window you are in,” Snead said.

Even before Miller arrived, the Rams (7-1) were considered Super Bowl favorites, with a defensive unit leading the league in sacks (25). The exchange made it clear that Los Angeles, which will host the Super Bowl at its stadium this season, is in “win-now” mode.

But the team’s willingness to give up draft capital limits their ability to expand that window in the cheapest way possible – by developing players into starters while on rookie contracts.

Since trading 14 spots to select quarterback Jared Goff with the No.1 overall pick in 2016, Snead and the Rams front office have frequently handed out draft picks to other teams to poach their best assets. They reached the Super Bowl in the 2018 season with Goff, then tried to build around him through trades, including acquiring 2019 cornerback Jalen Ramsey from the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for picks, including two at the first round that year.

When it became clear that Goff would not be bringing Los Angeles back to the Championship game, Snead scored Stafford by bundling Goff’s contract with picks, including two in the first round.

Stafford and Ramsey were in the top five caps of their draft, and the Rams didn’t want to lose enough to be in contention for such a high draft. Snead said it was more useful to trade picks that would have likely landed in the mid-20s to acquire proven players.

“The good thing about doing it this way is you can’t guess,” Snead said. “The player lived up to his draft status. “

It’s no mystery how Miller, the second overall pick in 2011 and eight Pro Bowl selections, should behave. Super Bowl MVP of the 2015 season, he has 110½ career sacks and four and a half this season. His presence on a defense with Ramsey and tackle Aaron Donald will further complicate the offensive coordinators’ play scripts and should ease Donald’s double teams.

Last week, the Rams traded starting linebacker Kenny Young to the Broncos to free up space under the salary cap. Rams coach Sean McVay told reporters last month he initially didn’t think the team would make a dramatic move before Tuesday’s trade deadline, but he and Snead jumped at the possibility of swap for Miller.

“I like fearlessness, I like aggression, and that philosophy has kind of evolved and continues,” McVay told reporters Monday of his relationship with Snead.

“We are not afraid of these consequences because we will attack the opportunities to be successful,” he added. “I think that’s the mindset we have as an organization, as a team and in our building. “

Snead and McVay balked at the idea that the team’s aggressive business approach meant the organization saw no value in the draft.

“We still believe in it and we think you can use it in a very special way depending on the options available to us,” Snead said.

The Rams were able to find contributors in later rounds, which they attribute to their scouts finding underrated players and their post coaches developing them.

The team’s top receiver, Cooper Kupp, a 2018 third-round selection, leads the league in catches (63), yards (924) and touchdowns (10). Receiver Van Jefferson and running back Cam Akers, who tore his Achilles tendon before training camp, were second-round picks in 2020.

“There’s a formula to a lot of the things we do behind the scenes,” McVay said. “There is a vision in place. And we think it suits us, and maybe not for everyone. “
