In this case, “Gucci” takes the caveats further, with the opening warning “inspired by a true story”, a signal that the filmmakers may have taken more liberties than usual. . Yet the film is not presented as magical realism, or even open satire. It is based on Sara Gay Forden’s non-fiction book, “The House of Gucci: A True Story of Murder, Madness, Glamor, and Greed”, and none of the names have been changed, creating an expectation that this that the viewer sees is at least a plausible recreation of a historical truth. There has been a lot of talk about the attention to period detail when it comes to the cupboards – so the fabulous 70s and 80s! Even some of the Gucci archives themselves!

But a summary and not exhaustive list of some of the changes made by the filmmakers includes: the erasure of three of Aldo’s four children (who were also in the family business); the removal of Dawn Mello, a key figure in Gucci’s rebirth under Maurizio and his outside partner, Investcorp (and an influential woman); the collapse of various outside lawyers and bankers into the sole figure of Domenico De Sole, who has been transformed into a “The Godfather” Tom Hagen figure who not only does a dirty professional job but also a personal one; and the rapid advance of the groundbreaking Tom Ford collection to associate it with Maurizio’s leadership (that’s not true; it didn’t involve Gucci men or thongs either – these have come years older. late).

Such a reduction can often be excused in the name of rationalizing art and history: plot details that only matter to insiders. And the true Gucci saga, with its competing power plays in boardrooms, has been convoluted at the best of times. In an age when attention span is limited, you can see why it seemed better to leave it on the cutting room floor.

Except there is also another element that was also elided in the film: why it all mattered in the first place.

For that, we have to go back to the myth of elegance, craftsmanship and a bit of flash encapsulated by the word “Gucci” that made the products – shoes, bags and clothing – desirable as markers of both aspiration and success. And that was created in large part by the exact characters the film turns into caricatures, embracing the flashy attributes of success – the furs! Ferrari! – to blow out a rotten kernel. They can be fun to watch (Jared Leto and Lady Gaga may even get Oscar nominations from them), but as the makers of tastes they are impossible to believe.

By most accounts, Aldo and even Paolo, not just Maurizio and Rodolfo, were magnetic figures whose cart reflected the neat substance of what they were selling – and, indeed, helped sell it.

In a recent review of the movie for Air Mail, Tom Ford, who had a front row seat to the whole story (but not the one that is precisely portrayed in the movie), wrote: “In real life, none of this was camp . It was sometimes absurd, but ultimately it was tragic. The lack of nuance in the film made it, he writes, “deeply sad.” During a phone call, Domenico De Sole said much the same.

In their statement, the family said they reserve the right to “protect her name, image and dignity,” which looks like another Gucci case that may be looming.
