In response to a letter titled “The Parallel Between Abortions and Vaccines,” comparing the two problems is like comparing apples and oranges.

While both are personal decisions about her body, one decision (whether to have an abortion or not) affects a woman and her unborn child, while the other decision (whether to get the COVID vaccine or not) affects everyone. the society.

We have many rights and freedoms as Americans – the right to bear arms, the right to privacy, etc. We also have laws in place to protect society as a whole – traffic laws, food and drug regulations, etc. Just because we have the right to bear guns, does that mean we can shoot who / who we want? The right of an individual to do whatever he wishes comes to an end when it has a negative impact on the greater good of the community as a whole.

In an ideal democratic society, decisions should be made on the basis of what benefits the greatest number of people in order to protect those with little or no voice. It is a noble goal that is not always achieved for a myriad of reasons, usually due to greed or personal interests. Supporting the ideal always involves individual compromises.

I clearly remember the day in marriage counseling when my ex-husband defined compromise as “an ingenious solution where everyone involved gets whatever they want”. My failed marriage never found this ingenious solution.

A compromise well done means that no one gets everything they want, but society ultimately benefits. And not getting everything you want can be a difficult (but possible) pill to swallow. Compromise at this time is a scarce commodity and is something sorely needed if we are to live together in health and peace.

So let’s go back to the original premise that the right to have an abortion parallels the right not to be vaccinated against COVID – think again. My personal choice to have an abortion (or not) has no impact on anyone else or on those close to them. My personal choice not to receive a COVID vaccine or to wear a mask puts everyone around me at potential risk of illness and even death.

It’s time to compromise. If you don’t believe in abortion, don’t, and maybe even consider adopting someone else’s unwanted child. The trade-off for those who choose to have this abortion is the emotional pain of their decision knowing that there was potential life involved.

If you choose not to wear a mask or to get the vaccine, fine. The trade-off is that you can’t go out in public (or send your kids to school) where you or your kids could potentially infect lots and lots of others. The science is there to support both the vaccine and the wearing of masks as a way to prevent the spread of COVID.

If I could have one wish for our world, it would be for us all to stop thinking only about ourselves and our wishes, and start thinking about those around us and what will bring the greatest good to the most. large number. So please think twice. Wear a mask and go for the vaccine. It is no longer about politics.
