So no, there won’t be a Logan Roy wow factor at this shareholders’ meeting. But the Roys have an even bigger problem. Before Logan loses his mind, he orders that they reject the grand peace deal their opponents have offered them. But did he really know what he was saying at the time, or was he already slipping? (Roman: “Can we just give him some cranberry juice and ask him again about the case?”)

It is of course the problem of betting everything on an imposing figurehead. Leaders can report. They get older, they get weaker. As the Roys make multibillion-dollar decisions based on their patriarch’s mumbles about imaginary cats, Sandi Furness (Hope Davis) is in a nearby sequel, consulting her own father, Sandy (Larry Pine). He also has chronic medical conditions, leaving him mostly motionless and inaudible. When Sandi meets Shiv to try to find what Gerri likes to call “a transaction space,” each of these two very smart and very competent women say, “I just do what my dad tells me.”

Instead of bringing their own new ideas to the family business, Sandi and Shiv must stand up for the decisions their clearly diminished fathers make, even when those choices seem motivated more by resentment and paranoia than by good business acumen. Sandy, for his part, seems primarily motivated by a desire to strike a deal that robs the Roys of one of the attributes of power. First, he asks that he be given the right to veto any decision to make a member of the Roy family a future CEO. Then, when he reluctantly gets a “yes”, he returns with a request that the Roys ditch their private jets. (Roman: “First, they came for the pajamas, and I didn’t say anything. …”

As for Logan, even though he’s under a criminal investigation and may lose control of everything he’s built, he still refuses to believe he doesn’t have all the assets. Whenever Sandy and Stewy’s camp offers a concession – just to avoid the uncertainty of a vote – Logan sees it as a sign that they’re scared. Before sinking into inconsistency, he suggests either bluffing or letting the press know that they are hesitating, to show shareholders who really is the boss.

One of those shareholders is Logan’s full brother, Ewan: another old man suffocating a young one. In Ewan’s case, it makes life difficult for Greg, who disappointed his grandfather by signing the Waystar Common Defense Agreement, throwing his lot with the people Ewan calls, “My brother and his brother. bunch of villainous shills. ” He informs Greg that he changed his will, giving all his money to Greenpeace. (“Even my part?” Greg asks. “That was part one,” Ewan replies.) Trying to shake his grandson, he said seriously, “Your life is no trifle,” adding: “You have to take it seriously, kid. Greg nods, then later asks someone else, “Do you think it’s possible to sue a person… a grandparent, for example… in a way that is, like… of in a loving way? “
