“Hello, my name is Pablo Larraín and I am the director of Spencer. This scene is very important in the movie and it’s in the first third of the movie. And we see Diana walk into a dinner party where the whole royal family is there. Diana, of course, is played by Kristen Stewart. And this is the very first scene where we start to see what she sees and feel what she feels. And how do we do it? That was the question. How to invite the spectator to his point of view on the situation? And some things don’t really happen and they just happen in her imagination, in her perception, in her own fantasy of reality. And this reality somehow interferes with a conflict that has happened to him before with the family. So we really see the consequences of this conflict. The main consequence is her mental distress and the way she could possibly start to see things that are not really there. We did a lot of shots. It’s one of the scenes in this movie that has the most coverage, as pretty much everyone out there has had one shot and then we cover it from different angles. Because I thought we needed this material for later in the editing room, we could find the right rhythm in order to cut it properly. So it’s really a scene that has a very precise rise where we started out with a bit slow pace like minimalist. And then as it passes, it creates more and more intensity until it becomes almost unbearable. And I wanted to reach that limit, I wanted to go as far as possible in terms of intensity, volume. And obviously Jonny Greenwood’s music is very relevant to how the scene works. I also felt it was important for Kristen to feel the pressure of family. So what I did was I asked Kristen to stay away from the set until everything was ready, and she never came in and never saw them until. until we shot this arrival. And she has this necklace that we know Charles gave this necklace to Camilla Parker Bowles. And the public knows that this necklace is not just a necklace, it is the representation of a broken marriage, the representation of a very painful gift. So we discussed this with Jonny Greenwood, our songwriter, about how it should be played. And I remember asking him to create something that could have a progression out of something, music that could be played in that context, it’s music that’s kind of designed to disappear, just to be. in the background and then eventually becomes very relevant and very intense and helps you define what it is going through. [CLATTERING] “It is therefore a very beautiful and strange work, because the composition evolves into a state of panic. It was very important for the process of creating the scene and for the outcome of the scene. [MUSIC INTENSIFIES] “And we feel for her, we feel with her, and I think Kristen does an amazing job of sorting out the physical, the emotions. It’s a scene with no dialogue, it’s just music and sort of a cinematic progression and the dramatic progression and the interaction between her, the Queen, Anne Boleyn, and of course, Charles.
