As she said, COP26 ended with a lot of empty promises and blah-blah-blah, just like the previous 25 COP meetings. All the while, greenhouse gas concentrations have continued to rise, at a breakneck rate leading directly to climate catastrophe. Positive feedback mechanisms are already in operation.

Slowing ocean circulation, melting ice and raging forest fires will plunge us irreparably into a world of hell and high water. Millions will die; billions will be displaced; cities and even countries will be submerged. Yet the most emitting countries – the United States, China, India, EU, Russia, Australia, Indonesia – will not stop burning coal. Oil-exporting countries and major oil companies plan to extract and sell more.

Promises to do something by 2030 or 2060 are unnecessary. Governments have to do something tomorrow.

In this country, the Biden administration’s proposals are totally inadequate. It’s fine to spend money on resilience and adaptation, but the problem will not be solved by spending money on it.

To paraphrase Chief Justice Roberts, the way to stop carbon emissions is to stop emitting carbon. Building on the successful experience of the RGGI and the California system, sales of fossil fuels in the national economy should be capped and that cap should be quickly reduced year after year.

Yes, that means fuel prices will rise and low-income households will feel it the most, but these are exactly the households that will suffer the most from climate change itself and they can easily be offset by other tax changes. and tax. Doing so would demonstrate real American leadership and could spur other governments to take comparable action. Otherwise, politicians will keep talking while our children’s world is doomed.
