This signal is intended to activate, in particular, the Whites who remain in the suburbs. We know that now, in the country’s largest metropolitan areas, the majority of Black residents live in the suburbs. Now, the majority of immigrants live in the suburbs. Now the majority of Latin Americans and Asian Americans live there. But most of the media, when they say “suburb”, they mean “white”.

We must therefore specify who we are talking about. And if we continue to think that the suburbs are all white, we never ask black suburban mothers or Asian suburban mothers what they really think about this policy. Unfortunately, we’ve been trained to say, “If white women think of this as a problem, it’s the voice of the suburbs. And frankly, it is not. Because we see time and time again, as you speak to these residents, many people of color in the suburbs immediately saw through the hubbub of critical breed theory a hissing dog.

But it also raises the question of what coalition politics will look like. So many people have assumed, because the suburbs are getting blacker, darker, poorer, that they are just going to vote Democrat in a straight line. And I think when we look, we actually see that there are times the Republican Party has made significant inroads in terms of mobilizing voters of color from the suburbs. It varies widely by race and ethnic group. Blacks remain firmly democratic in the suburbs.

Latinxes depend a lot on geography. Asian Americans, again, a lot depends on the geography and ethnicity at hand. So for us to think about critical race theory and suburbs, we have to think about how suburbs came into being. We need to think about how this is a signal and not assume that, as we have a growing share of people of color and poor people in the suburbs, they are necessarily going to vote Democratic.

In your job, you talk to parents in the suburbs. What do you think is driving some of these right-wing shifts in suburban communities of color? What are people telling you?

Part of the job is understanding that people who were lucky enough to go for the suburbs – that is, they had the means and they chose – they often try to organize a guy of particular life. So when we talk about social policies that widen the safety net, when we talk about policies that put race at the center of discussions, it is, in some cases, a misunderstanding of the reality of the suburbs. Many suburban dwellers of color have tried to assimilate and come to terms with the idea that we don’t have to talk about race. Many locals of all races said one of the reasons they left town was because safety net – the safety net was a burden that took away more taxes.

There is now no more poor in the suburbs than in the central cities, which means that these problems reappeared for these same suburban dwellers. They have to reckon with the thing they tried to escape.
