Season 5, Episode 4: “Fault, okay ?!” Nathan, Nathan, Nathan. There’s a lot we still don’t know about Nathan, but we do know that Issa...

Nathan, Nathan, Nathan. There’s a lot we still don’t know about Nathan, but we do know that Issa likes him, or at least likes to keep him with him. This week, the former and possibly the future couple overcome their emotional confusion in the bedroom, by the second episode of this season, and move into new territory for more than one reason.

The episode begins at the beach, where Nathan celebrates his barbershop with his friends. When Issa arrives, along with Molly and Kelli, she is desperate to see if Nathan will be as warm to her as he was before she “cried in his mouth” as she puts it. It’s been a week and even though they texted the matter hasn’t been discussed.

As usual, Issa becomes uncomfortable when she is not sure of herself. Watching her talk to Nathan is like hearing fingernails scratching a chalkboard – it’s beyond grimacing. She asks about the weather and speaks in turn. Everything comes out of her mouth except what she feels for the other night. Nathan doesn’t return his attention and seems cold, which makes Issa believe he doesn’t love her anymore.

We’re also not sure why Issa is nervous here – as far as we know she was happy to be single. She’s at the beach with Nathan because she wants to be, but why exactly Is does she want to be there? It’s as if she hadn’t thought of it on her own. Nathan doesn’t know what she wants either, and it looks like the failed hug has muddied what he wants. thought she wanted. He tells his friends the same as they head to Sharky’s bar, after an earthquake and the threat of a possible tsunami put the beach party on hold.

Whether at the beach or the bar or at a random Jason Derulo event later, Molly and Kelli play the perfect sidekicks. Kelli is hilarious and experiences a series of emotional breakthroughs – she quit drinking until she becomes “enlightened,” she says. This could be a signal for Issa and Molly to do the same, but no: Molly is being harassed by two of Nathan’s friends and she likes it, and Issa is still sorting out her feelings.

These include something like jealousy when, while the others are playing spades, Issa watches what she interprets as a romantic flirtation between Nathan and his friend Resha, a voluptuous and bombastic petite woman. Issa assumes that Resha and Nathan have been intimate, and this pressure forces her to be candid with him.

“I just wanted to check in, are we cool?” ” she asks.

“Nothing has changed for me,” Nathan replies, stoically.

“So, are we still friends?” She said humorously, looking for warmth.

“Yes,” Nathan replies before walking away.

In the last two episodes, we’ve seen how Issa has grown over the year since she broke up with Lawrence. She started her own business and improved her relationship with Molly. She is confident at work, even though his client shot her on social media and took time for her. Her awkwardness and insecurity around Nathan illustrates how, despite all of her personal progress and evolutions, she’s still the same Issa we’ve known for years.

She doesn’t know enough about Nathan to be rooted in how she feels about him. It’s a butterfly she’s trying to capture in a jar, and it constantly flies out of her reach.

All we to know about him is that on occasion he disappears to deal with his mental health problems. This is the reason he ghosted Issa the last time around, in season 4. In this episode, we learn more about Nathan from his cousin, Thomas. For example, when Nathan lived with him, he left without warning and returned a few days later, in the middle of the night. Such unpredictable behavior is why Thomas finally wanted Nathan to stop staying with him – this revelation shocks Nathan, who had always blamed his cousin’s wife for throwing him out. (At Sharky’s, the woman suggests that Nathan likes to give up on things.) The conversation reveals that before he met Issa, Nathan was often “manic,” as he will explain later.

While his friends are at a Jason Derulo party, Issa finds Nathan trying to figure out what he learned from Thomas. After a day of multiple misfires, they are finally honest with each other and the ground shakes.

“I don’t want to just be friends with you,” Issa said.

“I don’t want to be friends with you either,” Nathan replies.

Nathan and Issa kiss and as they kiss there is a cue.

Issa and Nathan might be getting back together now, but it looks like there is a lot going unrecorded, by the two. I also can’t help but worry about Issa’s reunion with an ex, who became an ex for a reason.

Is Issa being honest with herself? Can she hold Nathan or will he fly away like he has done so many times in the past?
